Jacksonville State, James Madison headed to bowl games
Jacksonville State and James Madison will wind up in bowl games after all.
There will be a maximum of 80 bowl-eligible FBS teams after Saturday’s late results, which would be two short of the number of postseason slots. Thus, the Gamecocks (8-4) and Dukes (11-1) will get two available bowl slots despite technically being ineligible due to their status as FBS transition teams.
NCAA rules allow transition teams to play in bowls if all slots are not filled by 6-win teams. Jax State head coach Rich Rodriguez notified his team of the news while on the flight back from Saturday’s loss at New Mexico State.
Bowl pairings will be announced Dec. 3, the day after the completion of the various conference championship games.
