Reports: Miss. State closing in on Jeff Lebby as coach
Mississippi State appears to be on the verge of hiring Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby as its new football coach, according to multiple reports.
The 39-year-old Lebby previously worked in the SEC as offensive coordinator at Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin in 2020-21. He would replace Zach Arnett, who was fired on Nov. 13, 10 games into his first season.
In addition to his work Kiffin and the Rebels and with Brent Venables and the Sooners the last two years, Lebby was also Central Florida’s offensive coordinator under Josh Heupel in 2019. He also coached in various roles from 2008-16 at Baylor, where father-in-law Art Briles was head coach.
Lebby has some baggage from his Baylor days, however. He was named among the coaching staff members who ignored or helped cover up sexual assault within the Bears program, which led to Briles’ firing in 2015.
Mississippi State finished 5-7 this season, ending the season with a 17-7 loss to Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl on Thursday. Arnett was hired last December following the sudden death of coach Mike Leach, who coached the Bulldogs to a 19-17 record in three seasons.
