NFL Black Friday: Even a Hail Mary backfires on Jets

Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand recorded his first sack since the 2018 season, and he wasn’t the only Alabama alumnus to take down New York Jets quarterback Tim Boyle in the NFL’s first Black Friday game.

Miami nose tackle Raekwon Davis also recorded his first sack of the 2023 season in the Dolphins’ 34-13 victory over the Jets.

A fourth-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions in 2018, Hand made the Pro Football Writers of America’s NFL All-Rookie team when he recorded three sacks in his first season. But from 2019 through 2022, injuries limited Hand to 18 games.

On Sunday, Hand appeared in his 10th game in 2023 as part of the Dolphins’ defensive-line rotation and got home in the fourth quarter on Boyle, who was New York’s third starting quarterback this season after Aaron Rodgers got hurt and Zach Wilson got benched.

New York intercepted Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa twice in the final 65 seconds of the second quarter, including a pick six that cut the Dolphins’ lead to 10-6. But that momentum disappeared when Miami safety Jevon Holland intercepted Boyle’s Hail Mary and ran 99 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half.

Tagovailoa completed 21-of-30 passes for 243 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The former Alabama All-American connected with wide receiver Tyreek Hill on a 7-yard toss for the game’s first touchdown with 8:21 left in the first half.

Boyle completed 27-of-38 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also got sacked seven times as New York finished with 159 yards for the game.

Davis made two tackles after starting at nose tackle for the Dolphins. Hand made three tackles.

In addition to the Crimson Tide trio, nine other players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Miami-New York game:

· Lester Cotton (Central-Tuscaloosa, Alabama) started at left guard for the Dolphins.

· Dolphins defensive tackle Byron Cowart (Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jets cornerback Tae Hayes (Decatur) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Tyreek Hill (West Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Dolphins. Hill had nine receptions for 102 yards and one touchdown after he entered the game leading the NFL with 1,222 receiving yards and nine touchdown receptions. Hill recorded his seventh 100-yard receiving game of 2023 and the 33rd of his career. Hill also had a rushing attempt that gained 2 yards on Friday.

· Jets defensive end Bryce Huff (St. Paul’s Episcopal) recorded one sack to push his season total to six.

· Jets defensive end Carl Lawson (Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· C.J. Mosley (Theodore, Alabama) started at linebacker for the Jets. Mosley led the Jets with 14 tackles, made one tackle for loss and broke up one pass.

· Dolphins wide receiver Anthony Schwartz (Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood (Auburn) did not record any stats.

· Jets tight end C.J. Uzomah (Auburn) did not record any stats.

· Jaylen Waddle (Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Dolphins. Waddle caught eight passes for 114 yards. Waddle had his second 100-yard game of the season and ninth of his NFL career.

· Quincy Williams (Wenonah) started at linebacker for the Jets. Williams made five tackles.

· Quinnen Williams (Wenonah, Alabama) started at defensive tackle for the Jets. Williams made six tackles.

At 8-3, Miami is tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the best record in the AFC. The Dolphins play the Washington Commanders at noon CST Dec. 3 at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. New York dropped to 4-7 with their fourth consecutive loss. The Jets play the Atlanta Falcons at noon Dec. 3 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
