Thanksgiving NFL: Packers, Cowboys, 49ers post wins

The NFL’s Thanksgiving tripleheader featured victories by the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.

The Packers upended the Detroit Lions 29-22, the Cowboys beat the Washington Commanders 45-10 and the 49ers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 31-13.

The Lions, Cowboys and 49ers finished Thursday with 8-3 records. But while San Francisco widened its lead in the NFC West and Detroit retained its lead in the NFC North, the Cowboys are still chasing the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East. At 9-1, the Eagles have the NFL’s best record.

Sixteen players from Alabama high schools and colleges saw action in the three Thursday contests.

Green Bay Packers 29, Detroit Lions 22

Green Bay upended Detroit by grabbing a 23-6 halftime lead as Packers quarterback Jordan Love threw two of his three touchdown passes before halftime and safety Jonathan Owens returned one of the Lions’ two lost fumbles in the first quarter for a touchdown.

Five players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field in the Green Bay-Detroit game:

· Brian Branch (Alabama) started at slot corner for the Lions. Branch led Detroit with eight tackles and broke up one pass.

· Lions defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Packers kicker Anders Carlson (Auburn) made a 43-yard field goal as Green Bay took a 23-6 lead with 5:56 left in the first half and connected on 2-of-3 extra-point attempts. Carlson was wide left after the Packers’ third touchdown. He also came up short on a 62-yard field-goal attempt on the final snap of the first half.

· Packers wide receiver Grant DuBose (Park Crossing) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Packers safety Rudy Ford (New Hope, Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive. A biceps injury kept Ford sidelined for a second straight game.

· Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (Alabama) gained 54 yards on 11 rushing attempts and caught four passes for 19 yards.

· Packers cornerback Zyon Gilbert (Jeff Davis) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Lions defensive tackle Brodric Martin (Northridge, North Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Packers offensive tackle Kadeem Telfort (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jameson Williams (Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Lions. Williams had two receptions for 51 yards. His 38-yard reception in the fourth quarter was Detroit’s longest gainer of the game.

· Packers defensive lineman Colby Wooden (Auburn) did not record any stats.

Green Bay (5-6) gets a prime-time game in its next outing when the Packers play the Kansas City Chiefs at 7:20 p.m. CST Dec. 3 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Detroit (8-3) plays the New Orleans Saints at noon Dec. 3 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Dallas Cowboys 45, Washington Commanders 10

Dallas cornerback DaRon Bland set an NFL single-season record with his fifth interception return for a touchdown in 2023. Bland’s pick-six came after the Cowboys had stopped Washington on downs on three of the Commanders’ first four second-half possessions. Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns.

Seven players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Washington-Dallas game:

· Jonathan Allen (Alabama) started at defensive tackle for the Commanders. Allen made one tackle for loss and registered one quarterback hit.

· Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Cowboys linebacker Rashaan Evans (Auburn High, Alabama) made three tackles.

· Commanders running back Derrick Gore (Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Cowboys cornerback Noah Igbinoghene (Hewitt-Trussville, Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Commanders defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis (Alabama) did not record any stats.

· Daron Payne (Shades Valley, Alabama) started at defensive tackle for the Commanders. Payne made three tackles, recorded two tackles for loss and broke up one pass.

· Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves (South Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Brian Robinson Jr. (Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, Alabama) started at running back for the Commanders. Robinson ran for 53 yards on 15 carries and caught two passes for 11 yards.

· Commanders offensive tackle Trent Scott (Lee-Huntsville) did not record any stats.

· Cowboys wide receiver Jalen Tolbert (McGill-Toolen, South Alabama) caught two passes for 49 yards. Tolbert’s 31-yard reception put Dallas on the Washington 7-yard line with 1:01 to play in the first half and set up a touchdown that gave the Cowboys a 20-10 halftime lead.

· Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams (Lee-Montgomery) made three tackles on defense and one tackle on special teams.

Dallas (8-3) plays on Thursday again in Week 13 of the NFL’s 2023 season at 7:15 p.m. Nov. 30, when the Seattle Seahawks visit AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Washington (4-8) plays the Miami Dolphins at noon CST Dec. 3 at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.

San Francisco 49ers 31, Seattle Seahawks 13

San Francisco strengthened its hold on the NFC West by beating its closest pursuer and opening a two-game lead. Forty-Niners running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns, and the San Francisco defense sacked Seattle quarterback Geno Smith six times.

Four players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the San Francisco-Seattle game:

· Seahawks linebacker Derick Hall (Auburn) made three tackles.

· Seahawks cornerback Mike Jackson (Spain Park) made two tackles.

· Forty-Niners tight end Cameron Latu (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Forty-Niners cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. (South Alabama) made two tackles on special teams. Luter tackled Dee Eskridge at the San Francisco 33-yard line to save a touchdown on the Seattle wide receiver’s 66-yard kickoff return after the 49ers’ first touchdown.

· Jarran Reed (Alabama) started at nose tackle for the Seahawks. Reed made four tackles.

San Francisco (8-3) visits the Philadelphia Eagles at 3:25 p.m. Dec. 3 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Seattle (6-5) visits the Cowboys at 7:15 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Week 13 Thursday game.
