Top running back earns Hollis Wright Birmingham Week 13 honors

Ramsay running back Ashton Ashford took home Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week honors for Week 13, just like he ran away from Leeds defenders last week on the football field.

Ashford averaged 19.4 yards per carry in gaining 194 yards and scoring three touchdowns for the second-ranked Rams in their 42-7 rout in the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Ashford earned 95 percent of the 11,426 votes cast in the balloting.

Ramsay (10-2) hosts Moody (10-2) in this week’s 5A quarterfinals.

Parker 4-star defensive lineman Jeremiah Beaman, a University of Alabama commitment, finished second in the voting. Beaman had four sacks among his seven tackles in a 21-14 win over Oxford in the Class 6A playoffs.

Parker (11-1) hosts Gadsden City (9-3) in the 6A quarterfinals on Friday.

Pleasant Grove quarterback Eric Handley was third in the poll after completing 10-of-17 passes for 234 yards and two scores in a 49-7 rout at Boaz.

The fourth-ranked Spartans (10-1) travel to No. 8 Guntersville on Friday for a Class 5A quarterfinal game.

Voting for the Hollis Wright Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.

In Week 13, more than 40,900 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
