South Alabama O-line, TE positions dealing with injuries
Two position groups that were especially banged up for South Alabama coming out of last week’s win over Marshall were the offensive line and tight end, where a number of players left the Jaguars’ 28-0 win due to injury or were already unavailable.
Left guard Dontae Lucas has been practicing at full speed this week, head coach Kane Wommack said, while tackle Joshua McCulloch might finally be ready to return after missing several weeks with a knee injury. Jordan Davis, who replaced McCulloch as the first-team left tackle prior to the Week 3 game at Oklahoma State, is questionable after leaving vs. Marshall with a leg injury, the second straight week he has been unable to finish a game.

At tight end, the Jaguars were already down Lincoln Sefcik, suspended the remainder of the season due to NCAA and university protocols. DJ Thomas-Jones and Jacob Hopper both left the Marshall game with injuries, but have been practicing this week, Wommack said.
“We were probably more concerned at the beginning of the week,” Wommack said. “It looks like the guys are moving around pretty well. Jordan will be questionable, but the other guys have looked pretty good. And it looks like Josh McCulloch is finally gonna be back, which is nice to have.”
South Alabama (6-5 overall, 4-3 Sun Belt Conference) meets Texas State (6-5, 3-4) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas. The game will be televised live by NFL Network.
• Quarterback Carter Bradley will wear the honorary No. 5 jersey for Saturday’s game at Texas State.
Despite playing just two years at South Alabama after transferring from Toledo, Bradley is the Jaguars’ all-time leader in several passing categories, including career yards (5,812), career touchdowns (45) and career victories by a quarterback (16). He also has been playing the last several weeks with an injured left knee, which caused him to miss the Nov. 2 game at Troy.
“Carter’s meant a ton to us on the field and off the field; he’s been a great leader,” Wommack said. “He’s been a great teammate. He’s been a very proficient passer. I don’t think people realize how much he’s had to fight through injury, well before he was ever knocked out of the Louisiana game. Those three weeks prior, he was hurting pretty significantly.
“He focused after that Louisiana game to get himself back, worked really, really hard to get back within a week and has really solid football the last two weeks. He’s taking care of the football for the most part and has made some really good decisions with the ball to allow us to play the style of game that we’ve played the last two weeks.”
A different South Alabama player gets the No. 5 jersey in remembrance of former Jaguars running back Anthony Mostella, who died in a 2010 motorcycle accident. Other players to wear 5 this season are wide receiver Devin Voisin (Tulane), linebacker James Miller (Southeastern Louisiana), linebacker Trey Kiser (Oklahoma State), quarterback Desmond Trotter (Central Michigan), wide receiver Caullin Lacy (James Madison), safety Jaden Voisin (Louisiana-Monroe), defensive lineman Wy’Kevious Thomas (Southern Miss), center Reggie Smith (Louisiana), wide receiver Jamaal Pritchett (Troy), linebacker Quentin Wilfawn (Arkansas State) and defensive end Jamie Sheriff (Marshall).
• Speaking of records, several other team marks are in danger of falling either on Saturday or in the Jaguars’ bowl game.
Running back La’Damian Webb has scored a touchdown in 10 straight games, which ties Brandon Ross’ school record set in 2009-10. Webb also need two more 100-yard games to break Xavier Johnson’s mark of 10 (2014-17) and 126 yards to move past Tra Minter (2017-19) into third all-time for the Jaguars.
Webb has 1,007 rushing yards this season, 50 behind Minter for second in program history and 56 behind his own school record of 1,063 set last season. The senior from Opelika already holds the Jaguars’ single-season and career record for rushing touchdowns (29 total, 16 this year).
Caullin Lacy has already become the Jaguars’ all-time leader in receptions (196) and needs three catches to break Jalen Tolbert’s 2021 single-season record of 82. Lacy has 10 career 100-yard games, tied with Tolbert for most in program history.
Lacy currently ranks third nationally this season with 1,222 receiving yards. With 252 more, he’d pass Tolbert’s 2021 school record of 1,474.
Lacy also has 210 punt-return yards this season, three behind Jeremé Jones’ 2010 school record of 213. Cornerback Ricky Fletcher has 11 pass breakups, two behind Darian Mills’ 2017 school-record of 13.
Safeties Yam Banks and Jaden Voisin rank 3-4 in South Alabama history in interceptions, seven for Banks and six for Voisin. Jalen Thompson (2015-16, 18-19) holds the record with nine picks, while Jeremy Reaves had eight from 2014-17.
Voisin also has four interceptions this season, two behind Banks’ program record set last year. Zach Brownell had five in 2009.
• South Alabama will practice again early Thursday before the team will break for Thanksgiving, Wommack said. Those whose families live within a 2-hour drive of Mobile will be permitted to travel home, while others will dine at the homes of their position coaches.
The Jaguars will then reconvene late Friday morning for their final walkthrough prior to the flight to Texas.
