Whatâs open, whatâs closed Thanksgiving 2023? Stores, banks; will mail run?
Thanksgiving 2023 is Thursday (Nov. 23) and for most people, the day is spent giving thanks with friends and family.
Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, so all but essential government offices will be closed. It’s also observed at most state, city and county offices, so you can expect closures for those offices, too.
The Post Office is closed on Thanksgiving 2023 and mail will not run. Post offices will reopen on Friday (Nov. 24) with mail delivery restarting. Thanksgiving is the 10th postal holiday of the year and there’s only one left – Christmas Day on Dec. 25 – this year.

Most major banks and post offices are closed on Thanksgiving and will remain closed throughout the day.
Public transportation generally runs on a limited schedule or doesn’t run on Thanksgiving. Check with your provider for more details.
Garbage services won’t be available on Thanksgiving and is typically moved back a day but check with your provider.
Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Kohl’s and most major retailers are closed on Thanksgiving. Also, Walgreens announced that, for the first time, it will close the majority of its locations on Thanksgiving though 24-hour stores and pharmacies will remain open. CVS will also be operating on reduced hours so check ahead.
Most grocery stores, including Publix and Aldi, will be closed on Thanksgiving, so check with Dollar General and Family Dollar if you need some last-minute supplies.
