With Thanksgiving also comes the annual Poarch Band of Creek Indians Pow Wow, a tradition that has lasted over 50 years to celebrate the preservation of their south Alabama tribal land.

This year, the 51st Annual Pow Wow will take place Nov. 23 and 24 at the Atmore reservation starting at 10 a.m. each day. Admission for both days is $15 and $10 for one day. Kids 6 and under get in free.

Among the most popular events are the dance competitions performed in authentic regalia and the crowning of the Poarch Creek Indian Princesses, who will serve as ambassadors for the Tribe at public events and at Tribal gatherings throughout the year.

The Pow Wow began in 1971 as a homecoming celebration for members of the Tribe, according to their website. A few years later, the Tribe began inviting other members of the community, which has made it into the large celebration it is today. The Tribe says people travel across the state and the country to experience the Poarch’s traditions.

“Pow Wow is our biggest event of the year, and one we look forward to celebrating,” said the Tribal Chair of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, Stephanie Bryan. “It is a wonderful opportunity for us to share more about our vibrant culture, rich tradition, as well as our history with those visiting.”

Other things to do at the Pow Wow include:

• Shop for crafts and goods for sale by local artisans
• Sample foods traditionally offered at the event such as barbecue, oak wood fire-basted corn, buffalo burgers, ham and fried chicken
• Enjoy traditional Thanksgiving dishes
• Activities for kids
• Opportunities to learn about the Tribe and the challenges Native people have faced throughout history

The annual Turkey Trot 5K Run will take place Thanksgiving day. On-site registration begins at 6:30 a.m., and the race begins at 7 a.m. from the Poarch Creek Community Center. Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for kids, and every participant gets a t-shirt. Runners can also register on their website.
