Suspect sought in Homewood burglaries now in custody
The suspect in a Homewood burglary that led to Homewood Middle School students and staff being kept inside the building earlier this month is now in custody.
Homewood patrol officers arrested Jacorey Donte Stephenson, a 32-year-old Birmingham man, on Monday at a residence in the 10 block of Aspen Cove, said Sgt. John Carr.
Stephenson is charged with two counts of burglary and one count of theft of property.
He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $60,000.
The latest break-in happened just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the 1500 block of Valley View Circle.
Carr said officers arrived and encountered the suspect running out of the residence.
Officers pursued Stephenson into the wooded area between Golden Crest Circle and The Club but lost sight of him.
A perimeter was set up and tracking dogs and drones were brought in.
Since the search area was close to Homewood Middle School, a secure perimeter lock down was put in place at the school. The search and the school’s safety protocol were over by noon.
Carr said detectives determined Stephenson was the same suspect in burglaries that happened in the 1500 block of Valley View Drive and in the 1500 block of Beckham Drive on Oct. 17, 2023.
