Live Updates: Hugh Freeze turns page from New Mexico State loss, preps for Iron Bowl

After a brutal loss to New Mexico State on Saturday, Auburn must quickly turn the page to the Iron Bowl.

Auburn and Alabama will play in the annual rivalry matchup at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Hugh Freeze returns for his final Monday press conference of the regular season. He’ll address the loss to New Mexico State and discuss the upcoming Alabama game. His press conference will begin around 10:45 a.m. CT. Check back to this page for updates once he gets started.

– Hugh Freeze is here. He starts off saying he’s never had a disappointment in his time in coaching like this loss to New Mexico State. Described it as “sickening.”

– “We did not respond in any way. That’s very frustrating. Ticked off.”

– Freeze said he wants to work on helping his team feel more connected for when a team gets “hit in the face” like it did Saturday by New Mexico State.

– “You can fix your feelings a whole heck of a lot with a good performance in that game,” Freeze said of the Iron Bow this week

– Asked if his team has what it takes to come back from the New Mexico State loss: “I don’t know yet.”

– “The biggest temptation you have right now is trying not to overdo the game plan,” Freeze said.

– Freeze said his team is still in a fog from what happened in Saturday’s loss, needs the team to snap out of that funk

– “A lesson in humility,” Freeze said of his offensive line struggling after being so good against Arkansas

– Freeze said his lesson this week in his team meeting is about focus. There are many distractions this week, coming off the loss, Alabama coming, Thanksgiving. So he said this week is going to tell him a lot about his team’s focus, its competitiveness. They’ll have to be focused, he said, because this week will be “a war.”

– On facing Jalen Milroe, Freeze gives a similar answer to what he said about facing Jayden Daniels at LSU: it’s most about slowing him down because stopping him is going to be difficult.

– Asked about the Kick Six with this week being its 10 year anniversary, Freeze said he didn’t see the play live. He can’t remember where he was. But when he did see it, Freeze said his first reaction was to call then-Auburn coach Gus Malzahn to ask how in the world something like that happened. Freeze said it’s one of the best finishes of all time.

– “We’re in a rebuild, that’s no excuse for what happened Saturday…We expect to give you the best of ourselves this coming Saturday in the Iron Bowl.”

– Freeze said New Mexico State controlling time of possession “killed our offense.” He also noted Auburn missed tackles. Said the focus just wasn’t there. There weren’t many adjustments Auburn had to make, it just wasn’t focused. He made sure to give New Mexico State credit for making every single big play.

– Freeze asked about recruiting. He said there will be a “plethora” of top talent on campus this week for the Iron Bowl. This is the last chance he has to prove something to recruits during the regular season. He knows Auburn has the resources to be successful, he just has to get the players in the door who will make an impact.
