South Alabama is bowl-eligible.

That’s the biggest upshot from a 28-0 victory over Marshall, which improved the Jaguars to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in Sun Belt Conference play with one regular-season game remaining. South Alabama thoroughly dominated the Thundering Herd (5-6, 3-4), who never even got into the red zone.

Regardless of what might happen in a bowl game, South Alabama can clinch a second-straight winning season by beating Texas State on the road next week. Before that, here are five takeways from the Jaguars’ thrashing of Marshall.

1. Jaguars’ last two seasons have been program’s high point

After never winning more than six games in any FBS season prior to 2022, South Alabama now has 17 wins the last two years under coach Kane Wommack. This season has been rockier than last year’s 10-win campaign, but it would be incorrect to draw any other conclusion from the last two seasons other than that the Jaguars have come a long way in a short time. It’s notable that four of South Alabama’s wins this season have been by scores of 33-7, 55-7, 55-3 and 28-0, the kind of dominance that you almost never saw by Jaguars teams from before 2022, let alone four times in one year.

2. USA’s La’Damian Webb is a running, scoring machine

Webb scored his 16th and 17th touchdowns of the season for the Jaguars on Saturday and also added a two-point conversion. He now has 104 points this season, which is a South Alabama program record. Webb did not score in South Alabama’s season-opening loss to Tulane, but has reached the end zone at least once in every game since, and more than once in five different games. In 22 games during his two-year South Alabama career, the Former Mr. Football has scored 30 touchdowns. He also went over the 100-yard rushing mark for the fifth time this season on Saturday, and is now has 1,007 yards in 2023. When added to his 1,063 from 2022, Webb is the only player in South Alabama history with two 1,000-yard seasons.

3. Jaguars’ defense is playing at a very high level

Shutouts have been a rarity in the history of South Alabama football and in the Sun Belt Conference in general, which makes Saturday’s blanking of the Thundering Herd all the more impressive The Jaguars forced a season-high three turnovers (all interceptions) and shut out an FBS opponent for the first time in program history. It was just the second shutout for South Alabama since it became a full FBS member, joining a 45-0 victory over Alabama A&M in 2018. The Jaguars did not sack Marshall quarterback Cody Pennington on Saturday, but did pressure him into several bad throws (including two interceptions). After largely corralling Arkansas State quarterback Jaylen Raynor in last week’s 21-14 win, that’s two straight excellent showings by the “Swarm D” when they were needed most.

4. South Alabama special teams made a positive difference

The kicking game wasn’t the difference between winning and losing on Saturday, but it did play a role in several key plays and situations during the game. Diego Guajardo nailed two reasonably long field goals in the first quarter after the Jaguars’ offense had stalled out in Marshall territory. Jack Martin delivered a season-long 54-yard punt. And most notably, Caullin Lacy was an asset as a punt-returner. He totaled 74 yards on four punt runbacks, setting up two of South Alabama’s three touchdown drives which lengthy returns to near midfield. The coverage units were also solid, not allowing any big returns to Marshall’s Jayden Harrison, who has two return touchdowns this year.

5. Jaguars have a chance to finish regular season on a roll

South Alabama’s pattern of two wins followed by two losses followed by two wins has continued with a second-straight victory on Saturday. That rotation will be tested next Saturday at Texas State, at whose stadium the Jaguars have never won. If South Alabama can go to San Marcos and win, that would not only lock up a winning record before a bowl game, it would result in the first three-game winning streak of the season. South Alabama could also finish second in the Sun Belt West Division with a win, which not much consolation, but might have some sort of determining influence on bowl assignments. The Jaguars could still finish 8-5 this season by beating Texas State and winning a bowl game, which just sounds better than 7-6 and light years better than 6-7. South Alabama will find out its bowl assignment Dec. 3, and thus has one more chance to impress those who run the postseason.
