AL.com Top 25: Alabama football, Georgia, Michigan reach critical stage in 2023 season
Ladies and gentlemen. Boys and girls.
We have officially reached the business end of the 2023-24 college football season.
Over the next two weeks, from coast-to-coast. Four quarters, or more will decide the fate of the College Football Playoff, the Heisman Trophy, and so much more.
That dramatic enough for you? It’s warranted.
The last edition of the four-team playoff is far from a lock, and there’s multiple scenarios where an undefeated team may actually miss out on the playoff. That’s how close things are at this point in the season.
Thankfully, some clarity will come this week with Michigan hosting Ohio State, and both Washington and Florida State in massive rivalry games.
Oh, and the Alabama Crimson Tide travel to Auburn for that little thing called the Iron Bowl.
Before all of that, lets rank some teams.
No. 25 Utah (7-4): Utah, I don’t have too many questions, but I do have one. Umm…what was THAT you produced on Saturday?!
No. 24 Tennessee (7-4): Last week, the Vols said goodbye to a possible New Year’s Six bowl, this week they may have said goodbye to a New Year’s Day bowl. Rough life.
No. 23 UNLV (9-2): They’ve got an outside shot at the NY6, but Barry Odom should also get some National Coach of the Year love.
No. 22 James Madison (10-1): No bowl game and they’re no longer undefeated. Happy Thanksgiving?
No. 21 Fresno State (8-3): The Mountain West race is over for the Bulldogs, in stunning fashion following a loss late Saturday night.
No. 20 Notre Dame (8-3): With a win this coming Saturday, Notre Dame will have won nine games for six-straight seasons.
No. 19 Arizona (8-3): Arizona has a chance to do the funniest thing ever, cost the Pac-12 a shot at the playoff, one more time.
No. 18 Iowa (9-2): For all of the jokes that were made about Iowa (and there were plenty), they’ve locked up a spot in the Big Ten title game. I’m impressed.
No. 17 Kansas State (8-3): There’s still an outside shot for the Wildcats to reach the Big 12 title game. They just need help, in a very complicated way.
No. 16 Tulane (10-1): If the season ended today, Tulane would most likely be headed back to the Cotton Bowl.
No. 15 Ole Miss (9-2): As long as schools like Missouri and Penn State are ahead of them, it appears Ole Miss is a lock for a New Year’s Day bowl game. Not a bad consolation prize.
No. 14 Oregon State: So, there’s no Pac-12 title game. Still, a fantastic season for the Beavers.
No. 13 Louisville: If you’re an Alabama fan, you’re secretly (ok, not-so secretly) the biggest Louisville Cardinals fan over the next few weeks.
No. 12 Penn State (9-2): With Ohio State or Michigan seemingly have locked up one of the four playoff spots, Penn State is probably headed to the Fiesta or Orange Bowl.
No. 11 Missouri (9-2): Keep this fact handy, Missouri’s last Fiesta Bowl appearance? 1972.
No. 10 LSU (8-3): Jayden Daniels is making one hell of a case for the Heisman Trophy for the second straight week.
No. 9 Oklahoma (9-2): The Sooners can’t reach the playoff, but a rematch vs. Texas in the Big 12 title game can make sure the Longhorns don’t either.
No. 8 Alabama (9-1): Iron Bowl this week, SEC Championship next week. Two weeks that will impact Alabama’s playoff hopes.
No. 7 Oregon (9-1): Swap out the Iron Bowl for the Civil War, and the SEC for the Pac-12 Championship and you’ve got Oregon’s current situation.
No. 6 Texas (9-1): As long as Texas takes care of business for the next two weeks, they should be playoff bound.
No. 5 Ohio State (10-0): It’s officially Michigan week, can Ohio State break the two-year losing streak?
No. 4 Washington (10-0): Was really impressed by Washington’s resolve on the road at rainy Oregon State.
No. 3 Florida State (10-0): FSU QB Jordan Travis appears to be out for a lengthy amount of time with a terrible injury. You just hope their playoff chances aren’t impacted by it.
No. 2 Michigan (10-0): It’s officially Ohio State week. The last time Michigan has won three-straight over Ohio State? 1995-97.
No. 1 Georgia (10-0): 13 days till Alabama.
