How the teams ranked ahead of Alabama in the CFP top 25 did Saturday
Alabama football scored its 10th win of the season on Saturday, blowing out Chattanooga 66-10. However, the FCS win isn’t likely to propel the Crimson Tide very far in the College Football Playoff rankings.
UA was No. 8 in the rankings entering Saturday’s game. Unfortunately for the Tide, every team ahead of it also won Saturday.
Here’s how those games shook out.
Georgia 38, Tennessee 10
The No.1 Bulldogs went to Knoxville and remained undefeated. The Volunteers have regressed in 2023 and were no match for Kirby Smart and company..
Georgia will close out its regular season against Georgia Tech.
Ohio State 37, Minnesota 3
PJ Fleck’s teams can make things difficult on contenders from time to time. Saturday’s matchup with the No. 2 Buckeyes was not one of those, and OSU remained undefeated.
The Buckeyes are set for their yearly date with Michigan on Saturday.
Michigan 31, Maryland 24
The Terps hung around and never let the matchup with No. 3 Michigan get out of reach. The Wolverines were without their head coach, Jim Harbaugh.
It didn’t matter. Michigan preserved its unbeaten record.
Florida State 58, North Alabama 13
After a slow start, the No. 4 Seminoles blew out their cupcake week opponent. Unfortunately for FSU, it might prove to be a pyrrhic victory.
Quarterback Jordan Travis went down with what looked to be a serious leg injury. Florida State plays Florida in Gainesville on Saturday.
Washington 22, Oregon State 20
The No. 5 Huskies barely survived a trip to Corvallis. However, even with a raucous home crowd and rotten weather, the Beavers weren’t quite able to pull off the upset.
Washington faces Washington State on Saturday.
Oregon 49, Arizona State 13
The No. 6 Ducks handled business against the Sun Devils. The one result that could harm Oregon’s strength of schedule for the playoff committee was Utah’s loss to Arizona.
The Ducks face Oregon State Saturday.
Texas 26, Iowa State 16
This one might have been too close for comfort for the No. 7 Longhorns. However, like every other school ahead of the Crimson Tide in the rankings, Texas finished the job.
UT hosts Texas Tech on Friday to close the regular season.
