A man who twice wrecked while fleeing police has been sentenced to prison on gun, drug charges

A Hueytown man who twice crashed his vehicle while fleeing from two separate police agencies has been sentenced to federal prison on drug and gun charges.

Shawn Jerome Scott Jr., 25, was sentenced to more than 13 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute 5 or more grams of methamphetamine, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession with intent to distribute 50 or more grams methamphetamine, and carrying a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Annemarie Axon, according to a Friday announcement by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona, ATF Special Agent in Charge Marcus Watson and FBI Special Agent in Charge Carlton Peeples.

Scott pleaded guilty to the crimes in August.

On Nov. 26, 2021, a Bessemer police officer initiated a traffic stop on Scott in a hotel parking lot, according to the plea agreement.

Scott attempted to flee but struck a brick pillar and became wedged between the pillar and a parked vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, police seized methamphetamine and a loaded Glock 9mm pistol.

On Aug. 20, 2022, Birmingham police officers tried to carry out a traffic stop on Scott.

Scott fled at a high rate of speed while swerving in and out of traffic.

The pursuit ended when Scott crashed into another vehicle at an intersection.

During the search of the vehicle, officers seized a Glock 9mm pistol equipped with a “Glock switch,” and 81.1 grams of methamphetamine.

ATF and FBI investigated the case along with Bessemer Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Royster prosecuted the case.
