Hereâs the Pat McAfee question Nick Saban said tried to get him in trouble with NCAA
Nick Saban is, if nothing else, media-savvy.
The Alabama coach, during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday, was asked a question he had to sidestep. McAfee asked Saban if former Alabama players ever helped recruit players to Tuscaloosa.
McAfee cited Tre Johnson, ESPN’s second highest-ranked uncommitted basketball player in the 2024 class, who committed to Texas on Wednesday. Johnson told McAfee on Wednesday that he had a chance to work out with former Texas star Kevin Durant.
“I talked to him, bounced some ideas off his head,” Johnson said. “He said it was a good place to come in and hoop and just play, great atmosphere. Just looking forward to getting down there on campus.”
So, McAfee asked Saban: “Any of the ex-guys get recruited to recruit guys for you? Do you utilize that with the boys that have been through Alabama?”
Saban replied: “Now you are trying to get me in trouble with the NCAA because you are not supposed to use ‘alumni’ to influence players. So, I have to say, ‘No. We never do,’” Saban said with a smile.
