Spanish Fort star flips commitment between ACC schools
Spanish Fort EDGE Cole McConathy has flipped is college commitment from Louisville to Miami.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound senior announced his decision on social media Wednesday evening.
McConathy has helped the Toros into the second round of the Class 6A playoffs where they will play at Pike Road on Friday.
“He’s a heck of a dadgum player,” Spanish Fort coach Chase Smith said. “It goes back to his intangibles – God-given ability, 6-foot-5 stature, his strength, his power. His mentality is about as hard-nosed as I’ve coached. He is a hard-nosed, old-school, physical football player.”
McConathy has been a terror for opposing offenses this season with 102 tackles, 30 tackles for a loss, 19 sacks and 37 quarterback hurries.
He came in at No. 12 on AL.com’s revamped A-List of the top senior recruits in Alabama last week.
“He’s not a tight end, as some recruiting him want to say he is,” AL.com recruiting analyst Randy Kennedy said. “He’s not a late bloomer or an overachiever. Cole McConathy is simply one of the best football players and prospects in the state. When he’s playing in the NFL, a lot of fans are going to be wondering why he didn’t play his college football in the SEC, specifically at Alabama or Auburn.”
Neither Auburn nor Alabama has offered McConathy.
