Courteney Cox on losing ‘Friends’ co-star Matthew Perry: ‘I miss you every day’

Courteney Cox on Tuesday released a statement honoring her former “Friends” co-star Matthew Perry, who died unexpectedly last month.

TMZ, citing law enforcement sources, reported the actor was found dead Oct. 28 at his L.A.-area home of an apparent drowning. First responders reacted to a cardiac arrest call, and Perry was found in a jacuzzi. Two days after his death, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office listed the actor’s cause of death in its online record as “deferred,” per CNN.

Perry is best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit 1990s milestone sitcom “Friends.”

Cox took to Instagram to pay tribute to Perry, with whom her character Monica Geller shared a famed on-screen romance with Perry’s character Chandler Bing.

“I am so grateful for every moment I had with you Matty and I miss you every day,” Cox wrote in the caption. “When you work with someone as closely as I did with Matthew, there are thousands of moments I wish I could share. For now here’s one of my favorites.”

Cox shared a clip from the episode “The One with Ross’s Wedding” (the season four finale) where the audience discovers Monica and Chandler have gotten intimate before her brother’s wedding, along with what happened after the take as the cameras kept rolling.

“To give a little backstory, Chandler and Monica were supposed to have a one night fling in London,” Cox wrote. “But because of the audience’s reaction, it became the beginning of their love story. In this scene, before we started rolling, he whispered a funny line for me to say.

“He often did things like that. He was funny and he was kind.”

“Friends” was one of the highest-rated shows on TV during its 10-season run on NBC, 1994-2004. The series provided a breakthrough role for Cox, who was born and raised in Birmingham, and cemented her fame as an actress. Her character, Monica Geller, was a neat-freak chef who could be bossy, obsessive, anxious, wacky, kind and caring — sometimes all at once.

The cast, including Cox and Perry, reunited in May 2021 for “Friends: The Reunion,” a special produced by HBO Max featuring iconic moments and never-before-told stories from the show’s actors. The reunion saw stars Cox, Perry Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer (plus special guests) gather to discuss everything from their casting process, show romances, bloopers and other cherished memories.

Perry’s co-star Matt LeBlanc, who played Chandler’s best friend Joey Tribbiani, also recently posted a heartfelt tribute to Perry on Instagram. “It is with a heavy heart I say goodbye,” he wrote. “The times we had together are honestly among the favorite times of my life. It was an honor to share the stage with you and to call you my friend.

“I will always smile when I think of you and I’ll never forget you. Never. Spread your wings and fly brother you’re finally free. Much love. And I guess you’re keeping the 20 bucks you owe me.”
