Basketball roundup: McGill-Toolen, LeFlore win Classic titles

Bennett Russ scored a game-high 17 points while tournament MVP Devin McCaine scored 13 to boost McGill-Toolen to a 58-43 win over Mary G. Montgomery in the championship of the Red Bracket of the Gulf Coast Holiday Classic at Spring Hill College on Friday night.

Russ was 7-of-7 from the free throw line and McCaine went 4-for-6 on free shots as the Yellow Jackets went 18-of-21 as a team and improved to 14-6 on the season.

La Shondae Horace scored 14 points and Erik Washington 13 for MGM. The Vikings hit just 7-of-16 of their free throws.

The game was tied four times in the first period with neither team leading by more than 2 points. In the second period, McGill-Toolen made a run and used a McCaine 3-pointer to take a 22-14 advantage before the Vikings fought back and trimmed the deficit to 26-22 at the half.

The game stayed close for the first few minutes of the third period before a Russ 3-pointer sparked an 11-3 run to put the Yellow Jackets up 41-26. MGM got as close as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but a couple of uncontested layups by Ray Andrews in the last minute of the game and a pair of Alex Heim free throws put the game out of reach.

Russ and Horace were both named to the all-tournament team.

BOYS

GULF COAST HOLIDAY CLASSIC at Spring Hill College

LeFlore 57, Blount 52: Tournament MVP Brittney Reed scored 18 points as LeFlore defeated Blount to win the Green Bracket Championship game on Friday night.

Cameron Patterson added 10 points as the Rattlers won their 10th straight game to improve to 11-3.

Dev Woulard scored a game-high 21 points for Blount while AJ Jackson added 13.

LeFlore was up 15-10 at the end of the first period and led by as many as 11 in the second before going into the locker room with a 30-21 halftime lead. Blount clawed back in the third period when a 7-2 run – highlighted by a Nick Nixon 3-pointer – trimmed the lead to 36-35. The Rattlers went back up by five before a Joseph Paige 3-pointer at the buzzer put the Leopards back to within two, 42-40.

The Leopards stayed in contention for most of the fourth period until the Rattlers went on a 7-2 run late in the game, courtesy of free throws by Patterson and TJ Richardson to put the game out of reach.

Woulard and LeFlore’s Adam Seals were named to the all-tournament team.

Cottage Hill Christian 71, Williamson 47: Trent Thomas led all scorers with 17 points as Cottage Hill Christian Academy routed Williamson to take third place in the Red Bracket on Friday night.

Shadrick Toodle had 16 points and Tyler Thomas added 13 as third-ranked Class 3A CHCA improved to 15-2.

Jarius Cross had 15 points and Jermaine McCree added 11 for 5A Williamson.

Cottage Hill Christian led 16-14 at the end of the first period and 34-28 at halftime, but in the third period the Warriors went on a 19-2 run to go up 53-30 and were never threatened again.

Theodore 64, Daphne 55 (OT): Theodore came back after a heartbreaking 46-45 loss at the buzzer to LeFlore the night before to defeat Daphne in overtime Friday afternoon to win the Green Bracket consolation championship.

Kam Johnson had 20 points, Trey Glover scored 12 and EJ Simmons added 11 to lead the Bobcats (6-8).

Daphne was led by Donavan Wilson with 24 points and Randy Williams Jr. scored 14.

Williams tied the game at 55-all with a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. Theodore, however, held the Trojans scoreless in the overtime period.

WILLIAM MITCHELL MEMORIAL at UMS-Wright

Fairhope 50, UMS-Wright 39: The Pirates wrapped up the tournament title on Friday, pulling away from a halftime 25-all stalemate with a 17-9 third period.

McRae Taul, who finished with 6 points in the championship, was named to the all-tournament team.

Bridges Simmons led Fairhope with 21 points on Friday and was an all-tournament selection. Spence Sims scored 17 on his way to tournament MVP honors.

UMS-Wright (12-7) will start Class 4A Area 1 play on Friday at Bayside Academy.

St. Paul’s Catholic (La.) 48, Oneonta 35: The visitors from Covington, La., took third place with the win.

Jackson Hickman of Oneonta and Reece Seicshnaydre of St. Paul’s were named to the all-tournament team.

Jackson 72, Baldwin County 61: The Aggies earned fifth place in the event with the win. Jonah Hughes scored 8 points in the game and was an all-tournament selection.

Tahjrick Bradley of Baldwin County finished with 12 points and was an all-tourney pick.

Mobile Christian 47, Bayshore Christian 40: Michael Moore scored 8 points and was an all-tournament choice for Mobile Christian in the seventh-place game.

Collin Hester of Bayshore scored 12 points and was all-tournament.

2022 METRO TOURNAMENT at Homewood High

Clay-Chalkville 60, Hartselle 55: The Cougars rallied from a 42-40 third-quarter deficit to earn the win on Friday. Hartselle led 14-9 after one quarter and Clay-Chalkville was up 29-28 at the half.

Kevin Kirk led the Cougars with 18 points. Devon McKinnon scored 11, with three 3-pointers, while Devin Finley and Davon Cheatham scored 10 points apiece in the win.

Rylan Smothers scored 14 points to lead Hartselle (10-8). Kiah Key and Ryan Dunn scored 13 points each. Dunn had three 3-point buckets.

BIG ORANGE CLASSIC at Hoover High

Hoover 73, Helena 34: The Bucs raced to a 27-8 first-quarter lead on the way to a win in the championship game. Hoover improved to 18-2 on the year.

DeWayne Brown scored 15 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and blocked 4 shots for Class 7A No. 4 Hoover. Salim London scored 13 points and had 5 rebounds. Jonathan Caicedo scored 13 points with 3 steals and 3 assists. Jarett Fairley had 5 assists to go with his 6 points.

Hoover hosts Ramsay on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

DOTHAN HOOPS CLASSIC

Dothan 55, Houston Academy 45: The Wolves won the title with the win over Houston Academy on Friday.

Thomas Dowd poured in 28 points and claimed 8 rebounds for the winners. Mehkai Menefee scored 16 points and had 5 rebounds.

PANTHER HOLIDAY JAM at Pelham High

Pelham 57, Brookwood 35: Pelham led 26-13 at the half and outscored Brookwood 20-11 in the final period on the way to the Jam championship. Pelham’s win was its second straight in the tournament.

Kamari Hollis led Pelham with 18 points. Corey Perkins pitched in 13. Hollis and Joe Wimberly were chosen for the all-tournament team.

Pelham hosts Carver-Birmingham on Tuesday.

PEA RIVER CHRISTMAS CLASSIC at Elba High

Brantley 51, Elba 43: The Bulldogs got a pair of double-double efforts from Keldric Brown and Dylan Davis to improve to 9-2 on the season. Brown scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and finished with 8 steals. Davis scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds.

Jordan Parks scored 8 and had 5 steals for Brantley.

GIRLS

WILLIAM MITCHELL MEMORIAL at UMS-Wright

McGill-Toolen 36, Jackson 28: The fourth-ranked Class 6A Yellow Jackets claimed the tournament championship with the win over No. 5 4A Jackson to improve to 15-3 on the season.

Tournament MVP Anna Reed McNeece scored 11 points to lead McGill-Toolen, including a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer to give the Jackets a 22-13 lead at intermission. McNeece scored 20 points in a 60-31 win over West Florida and 16 against Fort Walton.

Lindsey Cox made the all-tournament team, averaging 12 points per game in the event.

Jasmine Jones, who also made all-tourney, led Jackson with 12 points.

McGill-Toolen plays defending state champion Ellender Memorial of Houma, La., on Jan. 5 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Basketball Classic at the Alario Center in Westwego, La.

ELSEWHERE

Homewood 72, Calera 49: The Patriots improved to 15-4 on the season with the Friday rout.

Kayla Warren scored 13 points and had 4 steals in the win. Mira McCool led Homewood with 8 rebounds to go with here 9 points. Laine Litton also scored 9 points and Ryanne Ezekiel had 8 for Homewood. Annie McBridge had 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Trinity 48, Montgomery Catholic 34: The Wildcats earned the win on the road using a balanced offensive attack. Emma Kate Smith scored 14 points, pulled down 7 rebounds and had 7 assists. Maddie Smith scored 13 points with 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists. Francie Morris scored 13 points and had 6 rebounds for Trinity.

AISA

SHOEMAKER WARD HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL at Lakeside School

Terrell Academy 43, Lakeside 33: Lakeside fell to 5-8 on the year with the tournament loss.

Chloe Helms led Lakeside with 16 points. She also had 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Eliza Eriksen grabbed 13 rebounds and scored 8 points. Sophie Seaborn also scored 8. Helms and Eriksen earned all-tournament honors.
