Ric Flair calls out ‘non-athletic SEC journalist’ Finebaum, who claps back, over Jim Harbaugh

Ric Flair just entered the Michigan sign-stealing ring.

The wrestling legend took to social media in a way suitable for “The Stylin’, profilin’, limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin’ n’ dealin’ son of a gun.”

Flair called out SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum for what has been a pretty consistent verbal assault on Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines program.

“Thank You, Desmond Howard, for putting Finebaum in his place!” Flair posted on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“You’re right. Michigan is America’s Team! And the only person with personal issues is a non-athletic SEC journalist that should leave the great (Jim Harbaugh) and Michigan football alone. Can you imagine Paul Finebaum having the nerve to debate football with Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard? Outrageous! Go Blue! WOOOOO!”

Finebaum clapped back on Tuesday.

“Flair, in his Michigan fandom, is still chasing the success of the SEC as indicated by his behavior a couple of years ago with Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs,” Finebaum told AL.com.

“I guess he is right about one thing: ‘If you want to be the man, you have to beat the man.’”

The SEC Network analyst was referring to Georgia’s 34-11 win over Michigan in the 2021 College Football Playoff. The morning of the game, Flair took to then-Twitter in a Michigan jersey to reveal he was rooting for the Wolverines because of the perceived cold shoulder he received from Smart when in Athens.

Finebaum has been on the offensive when it comes to Harbaugh and the Michigan sign-stealing scandal. Here are just some of his comments:

Nov. 1

“Two weeks ago, I sat here with you and made the biggest mistake of my professional career. I gave Jim Harbaugh the benefit of the doubt. Never again. … This is a disgusting story with every revelation which happens every single day of the week. And the fact that the Big Ten has not done anything yet is inexcusable.”

“If Michigan wins the national championship and Jim Harbaugh is given that trophy, I think the rest of the sports world is going to turn its nose in disgust.”

Nov. 12

As somebody who deals with fan bases from primarily one conference, but it branches out a little bit broader beyond that, I’ve never come in contact with a fan base that’s as insecure and consumed with their own self-worth in a false way. There’s no more sniveling fan base in America than Michigan, either.”

In his post, Flair referenced Howard. The ESPN “College GameDay” analyst and former Michigan star stated Michigan wants due process before any discipline is handed down. Public outcry, he said, is driving the Big Ten to make hasty decisions. Howard then compared the Big Ten to the SEC.

“This would never happen in the SEC,” he said. “The SEC commissioner would never ever let Vanderbilt and Kentucky and all these other universities say, ‘Hey, you need to punish Nick Saban and Alabama right now. We know they are on a quest to win the national championship, but the Hell with that. You need to punish them right now.’ He would kick them out of his office. That would never happen.”
