A Homewood man has been charged after he reportedly killed his dog and held police at bay for nearly an hour last week.

Paul Joseph Albano Jr., 43, is charged with felony cruelty to a dog and three misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment, Homewood police Sgt. John Carr announced Tuesday.

“We will not be commenting on Albano’s custody status at this time,’’ Carr said, “but would like to relay that he does not pose any threat or danger to the public.”

His bond on felony charges is $15,000. Bond on the misdemeanor charges totals $3,000.

Homewood police were dispatched at 11:49 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, to perform a welfare check on Albano’s home on Edgecrest Drive, off Oxmoor Road.

Once officers arrived, they heard multiple shots fired from within the home.

Officers made entry but retreated when more shots were fired.

A perimeter was set up and Homewood’s SWAT team arrived on the scene. Albano’s wife and parents were standing with police a distance away from the house.

Police and at least one family member of the man spoke with him over a loudspeaker, asking him to surrender. He was alone inside the house.

At about 12:45 p.m., Carr said, the man surrendered peacefully.

After he left the house, police found his dog dead inside.

He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
