Troy looking to maintain focus after clinching division title

Troy has already clinched its second straight Sun Belt West Division championship, but coach Jon Sumrall isn’t about to allow his team to let up when there are still bigger prizes ahead.

The Trojans (8-2 overall, 5-1 Sun Belt) put their seven-game winning streak on the line when they take on Louisiana (5-5, 3-3) on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium, in a game that will also mark Senior Day. Troy is in line to host the Sun Belt championship game on Dec. 2, and has an outside shot at the Group of 5′s lone New Year’s Six bowl slot — but must keep winning to do so.

“It’s one of those things like, it’s nice to have it clinched, but it’s also human nature that people want to relax when they’ve accomplished something,” Sumrall said. “And my biggest fear is that — in the military, they talk about standing to (attention) at dusk and at dawn because that’s when the surprise attacks happen. How do we get our team to stand to, is I think my biggest challenge this week because they think they’ve done something. We clinched by default. We didn’t really do anything to earn it yet. It’s nice to be able to know we get to play in the championship game, but we have a lot left out there to improve upon.”

The game vs. the Ragin’ Cajuns looked at one point like it might be for the outright Sun Belt West title, though only the Trojans kept up their end of the bargain in recent weeks. While Troy was beating South Alabama 28-10 and Louisiana-Monroe 45-14 in its last two games, Louisiana was losing 37-17 to Arkansas State and 34-31 in overtime to Southern Miss to drop out of contention.

Though redshirt freshman Zeon Chriss is out for the year with a leg injury suffered vs. Arkansas State, the Ragin’ Cajuns remain a dangerous team even with backup Chandler Fields at quarterback. They average 31 points and rush for nearly 200 yards per game.

“Their offensive line is ridiculously good,” Sumrall said. “I think I could have a chance to get some yards playing running back behind their O-line. I’m just very impressed with their offensive and defensive fronts and their line. They can change how they play the game at quarterback, but their offensive line play is so good that it, it allows the quarterback position to be comfortable and calm.”

Though they allowed a second-half touchdown for the first time since late September vs. Louisiana-Monroe, Troy thoroughly dominated the lowly Warhawks in most every category. The Trojans totaled nine sacks, four by defensive end Javon Solomon and 3.5 by outside linebacker Richard Jibunor.

Solomon and Jibunor shared Senior Bowl National Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday, and both seem destined for All-Sun Belt recognition this season. Solomon has 11 tackles for loss and 10 sacks this season, while Jibunor has 10.5 and eight.

“It’s not just those two,” Louisiana coach Michael Desormeaux said. “I know the two edge guys are the ones that have all the sacks, but their interior rushers are really good, too. It’s not like you can slide to one side or the other. You’ve got block it straight up and the problem with that is, they’re so good against the run. You can’t just tee it up and run right at them, you’re going to have to throw the ball. So you’re going to have to be really good at pass (protection).

“(Solomon and Jibunor), they’re a problem. They’re really a mismatch when you try to leave a tight end on them in pass pro. In known passing situations, those guys can pin their ears back and go.”

Troy continues to click along offensively, led by two-time 1,000-yard rusher Kimani Vidal. The junior from Marietta, Ga., ranks second in the Sun Belt with 1,168 yards this season.

Quarterback Gunnar Watson is playing at a high level, having thrown 10 touchdowns in his last three games, and having thrown 163 consecutive passes without an interception. Jabre’ Barber has developed into Watson’s favorite receiver with 50 catches for 700 yards and four touchdowns this season, though the Trojans have plenty of viable options in the passing game.

“Every game can go either way,” Barber said. “Everybody in the receiving room can do the job. We’ve got a long list — Chris Lewis, Deshon (Stoudemire), Landon Parker, Devonte Ross — anybody can have a big game. With a lot of us being weapons, that helps out the team a lot.”

Sumrall is 20-4 in his two seasons at Troy, which naturally has caused his name come up in discussions for openings at Power 5 schools. Mississippi State fired Zach Arnett after less than one season on Monday, with Sumrall among those widely considered to be a candidate to replace him.

During Monday’s Sun Belt Coaches teleconference, Sumrall was asked if he’d been contacted about other jobs. He didn’t take the bait.

“Yeah, I was contacted by Troy about showing up to work today, so I was here at 5:30 this morning,” Sumrall said. “I think nobody else was in the parking lot when I got here. That’s the only school that’s contacted me about work. I’m damn glad I’ve got a job here.”

Speaking of coaches, Saturday will be Larry Blakeney Day in Troy, with the legendary Trojans coach honored throughout the day and during the game vs the Ragin’ Cajuns. Blakeney’s former players will attend a pre-game tailgate and join him on the field when he is recognized, while fans will receive a commemorative poster and can purchase related merchandise at the Trojan Threads store.

The 76-year-old Blakeney was Troy’s head coach from 1991-2004, winning 178 games and eight conference championships. He remains the winningest coach in Sun Belt Conference history.

“For us to be able to honor Coach Blakeney Saturday, I’m just overcome with joy,” Sumrall said. “I have so much respect for him and I’m excited to see him and (wife) Janice on Saturday. I’ve had the privilege to spend some quality time with Larry on a handful of occasions. I’m just humbled to be serving a role that he served in and knowing how he did it and the impact he made on so many people.”

Kickoff Saturday is set for 2:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy. The game will air live on NFL Network.
