63-year-old woman found on Ensley roadside was killed in dog attack

A woman found dead on the side of an Ensley road was killed in a dog attack, authorities announced Monday.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Sharon Kaye Billups Portis. She was 63 and lived in Birmingham.

The discovery was made just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the 2000 block of 18th Street Ensley.

Portis was found in a grassy area just feet off 18th Street. Her bicycle, which she was known to ride often, was just feet from her.

She was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:45 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing by Birmingham police.
