21-year-old charged in shooting during basketball game at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church

A Birmingham man has been charged after a shot was fired during a pickup basketball at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church.

Homewood police on Saturday obtained an attempted murder warrant against Kerry Jermaine Austin-Thornton. He is 21.

He will be transferred from the Homewood City Jail to the Jefferson County Jail. His bond is set at $60,000.

Police were dispatched at 9:39 a.m. Thursday to the church’s recreation center on Oxmoor Road on a report of shots fired.

Sgt. John Carr said Austin-Thornton fired one shot inside the rec center and left in a vehicle.

Police said the shooting stemmed from an argument over a basketball game. Details of the dispute have not been released.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Austin-Thornton was taken into custody several hours later at a home in the 7800 block of 6th Avenue North in Birmingham.
