Veterans Day 2023: Whatâs open, whatâs closed on Saturday, Nov. 11?
There’s a historic reason that Veterans Day is commemorated on Nov. 11.
On Nov. 11, 1918, an armistice was signed between U.S.-led Allied nations and German putting an end to World War I. The agreement went into effect on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day. Later, in honor of those who had served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, it was changed to Veterans Day. Today, the day honors all those who have served in U.S. Armed Forces in peace and times of war.
There were efforts to move Veterans Day from Nov. 11 to a Monday in keeping with other federal holidays such as Memorial Day and Labor Day. A law was passed in 1968 to change the commemoration to the fourth Monday in October but, as the Department of Veterans Affairs pointed out “it soon became apparent that Nov. 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans.”
