Veterans Day (Nov. 11, 2023) falls on a Saturday this year. In keeping with other holidays that fall on a weekend, most government offices, services and businesses are observing the day and closing on Friday.

The U.S. Post Office is doing things differently, at least when it comes to holiday scheduling.

U.S. Post Offices will be open Friday and closed Saturday. Mail will be delivered Friday, Nov. 10 but not on Saturday, Nov. 11. Post offices are closed on Sundays and mail is not delivered on that day, so you can expect delays until at least Monday.

USPS online services will remain available.

Veterans Day is the ninth postal holiday of the year, following New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day. Two more holidays remain, Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 23 and Christmas on Monday, Dec. 25.

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day. Later, in honor of those who had served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, it was changed to Veterans Day. Today, the day honors all those who have served in U.S. Armed Forces in peace and times of war.
