Veterans Day 2023: What’s open, what’s closed on Friday, Nov. 10?

Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11. Since the holiday falls on a Saturday, many government offices and others are observing the patriotic holiday on Friday, Nov. 10.

Veterans Day is set aside to thank all those who served in the U.S. military. The day traces its roots to the end of World War I when on Nov. 11, 1918, an armistice between the U.S.-led Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of what was then known as Armistice Day. Almost 30 years later, after U.S. soldiers had served in World War II and Korea, Congress voted to change the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in honor of all those who served in the military.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday, the ninth of the year. There are two more for 2022 – Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 23 and Christmas Day on Dec. 25.
