2 suspects charged with capital murder in 2018 cold case killing of Montgomery man

Two suspects have been charged with capital murder in the five-year-old cold case homicide of a Montgomery man, police said Thursday.

Lonnie Helms III, 28, and 24-year-old Kennedy Wilson, were charged with capital murder and second-degree assault in the Nov. 28, 2018 fatal shooting of Steven White Jr., 28, said Maj. Saba Coleman.

Helms was taken into custody Thursday and is being held in the Montgomery County jail without bond.

Wilson was already in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections on unrelated charges, Coleman said.

Montgomery police and fire medics responded to the 5900 block of Monticello Drive on Nov. 28, 2018 on a report of a disturbance in the area. They arrived to find White dead on the scene from several gunshot wounds. A second person was injured but survived.

Authorities said White was leaving the Alabama Hotel when several people began shooting into his vehicle.

Investigators were seeking the names of the drivers and the occupants of the vehicles when they sought tips on the cold case in June 2021.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Helms and Wilson were identified through tips.
