Position-by-position breakdown for UAB vs. Navy

The UAB football team is back on the road as it heads north to face Navy on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network.

So how do the teams match up? Here is AL.com’s position-by-position breakdown for UAB’s showdown with the Midshipmen:

Quarterback

Jacob Zeno returned last week and with a fury in leading UAB’s 12th-ranked passing offense (303.3 ypg). The junior set a UAB single-game record against an FBS opponent with a career-high 484 yards and five touchdowns. He is currently passing at a 75.4 percent clip, amassing 2,389 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and has rushed for 145 yards and four scores. Landry Lyddy, Trace Campbell and Harrison Barker have all played this season with varying amounts of success and failure.

Navy has started four different players at quarterback this season and Braxton Woodson, Tai Lavatai, Blake Horvath and Xavier Arline have combined to go 60-of-124 (48.3 percent) for 822 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. They have also combined for 510 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Arline started last week at Temple but any of the four could take the opening snap against the Blazers. Although the Midshipmen have increased their passing, they still rank 129th in the nation in passing offense (102.8 ypg), only one spot behind last place Air Force. Advantage: UAB

Running back

Jermaine Brown Jr. set a career-high in all-purpose yards (210) last week against Florida Atlantic and is now 59 yards shy of setting the program record in that category. The senior leads the rushing attack with 479 yards and nine touchdowns, while also hauling in 30 receptions for 343 yards and a score.

Along with Lee Beebe, who has 146 yards and a touchdown, Brown has helped the Blazers rank 78th in rushing offense (148.7 ypg) and 23rd in total offense (452 ypg). Receivers Brandon Buckhaulter, Amare Thomas and TJ Jones have also contributed to the running game and have combined for 13 attempts for 140 yards.

The Midshipmen are ranked 19th in rushing offense (197.5 ypg) and the running back committee has accounted for 70.1 percent of the production, along with 72.4 percent (595 yards) of the team’s receiving yards. Fullback Alex Tecza leads the unit with 547 yards and four touchdowns, followed by fellow fullback Daba Fofana with 259 yards and a score.

The split backs are led by sophomores Brandon Chatman and Eli Heidenreich, who have combined on 48 carries for 256 yards, and the latter leads all players with nine receptions for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Juniors Amin Hassan and Anton Hall, along with true freshman Tyler Bradley, round out the rotation with a combined 17 carries for 56 yards. Advantage: Even

Receiver/tight end

UAB’s receiving corps continues to rack up the YAC yardage and senior Tejhaun Palmer leads the unit with 36 receptions for a team-high 609 yards and five touchdowns, followed by true freshman Amare Thomas with a team-high 44 catches for 388 yards and three scores. Samario Rudolph has 22 receptions for 183 yards and a score, Fred Farrier II has 15 catches for 216 yards and TJ Jones has 12 catches for 208 yards and a pair of scores. Malachi Holt-Bennet caught the first touchdown of his UAB career last week and has four catches for 73 yards.

Bryce Damous is the top tight end for the Blazers, amassing 21 catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns, followed by Dallas Payne with 11 catches for 128 yards and Terrell McDonald with six receptions for 57 yards. Along with the receivers and tight ends, running back Jermaine Brown Jr. has been instrumental in the passing game.

In operating a trope-option scheme, Navy is not the most adept at downfield passing and it is quite glaring with its wide receivers and tight ends accounting for only 26.8 percent of the receiving production and none of whom have amassed more than 80 yards this season. Starting senior receivers Camari Williams and Jayden Umbarger have a combined 13 catches for 95 yards, including a score by Williams, and Nathan Kent has four receptions for 77 yards and a score. Cody Howard is the only tight end with a catch, a single reception for 32 yards, and Thomas Scully and Akalea Kapono join him in providing run blocking for the offense. Advantage: UAB

Offensive line

UAB’s offensive line has seen its fair share of changes on the right side but found continuity on the left side with tackle Will Parker and guard Luke Jones. Junior center Brady Wilson is a lynchpin at center and his backup, Adam Lepkowski, has taken over right guard duties with Quez Yates moving over to right tackles. Both changes come with Trey Bedosky out for the season with two torn labrums and Tater Reid also tending to an injury. The unit has given 24 sacks on the season but more than half came against Louisiana and UTSA.

Similar to the Blazers, Navy has used numerous linemen on the right side, more specifically right tackle, but have three multi-year starters to compensate for any troubles. Connor McMahon returns at left tackle, along with Joshua Pena at right guard, and Trey Cummings has five starts at right tackle but has missed the last two games. Right guard Javan Bouton and center Brent Self are first-year starters with the latte taking over following a season-ending injury to Lirion Murtezi. Sam Glover has registered two starts at right tackle and Ben Purvis started last week at Temple. Advantage: Navy

Defensive line

UAB has struggled against the run all season, ranking 124th in the nation in rushing defense (200 ypg), but may find success when considering Navy’s run-heavy attack is entirely one-sided at times. On the defensive line, Kevin Penn is having the best season of his career, putting up 31 tackles (4 for loss) and four sacks, and Fish McWilliams is as steady as they come in amassing 21 tackles (1.5 for loss), a sack and a forced fumble and recovery.

Michael Fairbanks II has been dominant at the defensive end position, positing 19 tackles (3.5 for loss), 2.5 sacks and three forced fumbles, and true freshman Miquon Merriweather has worked his way into the interior rotation as of late. Joker Gill and Tyrique Howard have dealt with nagging injuries but should be available this week. True freshmen Eamon Smalls and Emmanuel Waller have also earned playing time in the absence of Gill and Howard.

The Midshipmen operate out of a 3-4 base alignment and the defensive front leads the unit in ranking 50th in rushing defense (134.3 ypg). Senior defensive tackle Clay Cromwell leads the defensive line with 31 tackles (4 for loss) and two sacks, followed by senior nose guard Donald Berniard with 29 tackles (1.5 for loss) and 1.5 sacks. Tyler Narayan works sparingly behind Cromwell while Landon Robinson has contributed 18 tackles (2.5 for loss) and two sacks in concert with Berniard.

At defensive end, senior Jacob Busic was set for a productive final season before succumbing to a season-ending injury in the third game of the season, at which point he had four tackles (! For loss), a sack, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery. Junior Justin Reed has played in every game, starting the last five games following Busic’s injury, and has 28 tackles (3.5 for loss), two sacks and two fumble recoveries. Advantage: Navy

Linebackers

Senior Michael Moore is having a breakout season for the Blazers at SAM linebacker and leads the UAB defense with a team-high 61 tackles (5 for loss), along with a sack, pass breakup and forced fumble. Jackson Bratton is the defensive signal-caller in the middle, racking up 47 tackles (3.5 for loss) and two tackles, and true freshman Everett Roussaw is starting to come into his own and has 27 tackles (1.5 for loss) and a sack.

Will Sorrells has provided quality work alongside Bratton and Roussaw at middle linebacker, accruing 26 tackles and 1/2 sack, and Nikia Eason Jr. leads the edge rushers with 23 tackles (3 for loss), three sacks and two fumble recoveries, followed by Desmond Little with 21 tackles (5.5 for loss) and 3.5 sacks. Kendall Johnson has eight tackles and a sack, and returned his first interception for a 26-yard touchdown last week against Florida Atlantic.

A bulk of Navy’s defensive production originates from the linebacker corps, which leads the unit with a combined 20.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. Colin Ramous leads the team from his Will position, posting 66 tackles (3.5 for loss), a sack, three pass breakups and two forced fumbles, and Will Harbour has 60 tackles (7 for loss) and three sacks from the Mike position.

On the outside, Luke Pirris is the “Raider,” amassing 36 tackles (6 for loss), three sacks, three pass breakups and three fumble recoveries, and “Striker” Xavier McDonald has 37 tackles (3 for loss), three sacks and three forced fumbles. Advantage: Even

Secondary

Despite allowing Florida Atlantic’s LeJohntay Wester to have his way last week, the UAB secondary has improved throughout the season and ranks 59th in passing defense (226.1 ypg). Keondre Swoopes leads the unit while splitting time between strong safety and star safety and has 53 tackles with an interception and fumble recovery.

Ike Rowell is having a solid season as a first-year starter at safety, racking up 46 tackles and two forced fumbles, and Damien Miller has split time between safety and linebacker in amassing 24 tackles and forcing two fumbles. Ray Thornton III has 20 tackles and three pass breakups and true freshman Chris Bracy has 13 tackles and an interception.

The cornerback rotation is led by Mac McWilliams, nearing the completion of a full season after the past two ended early due to injury, and the junior has 39 tackles (1 for loss), six pass breakups and a fumble recovery. BJ Mayes and Colby Dempsey are tied for a team-high eight pass breakups and have combined for 58 tackles (2 for loss) with Mayes adding two picks. True freshman Ricky Lee III is coming along nicely and has eight tackles, two pass breakups and an interception.

While the front seven is a stout unit capable of putting a stop to opposing rushing attacks, the Navy secondary ranks 91st in passing defense (239.3 ypg) this season. Rayuan Lane III leads the backend at free safety, amassing 44 tackles (2.5 for loss), 1/2 sack, three interceptions, seven pass breakups and two forced fumbles, and Mbiti Williams works under the “Bandit” moniker in racking up 40 tackles and two pass breakups. Eavan Gibbons provides quality depth, posting 20 tackles (1.5 for loss), and Joe Hutson and Marcus Moore round out the rotation.

Sophomore Andrew Duhart operates as the boundary cornerback, racking up 26 tackles (2 for loss), a sack, an interception and a pass breakup, and Dashaun Peele has 24 tackles, two interceptions and three pass breakups as the field cornerback. Elia Larry fills out the tri-rotation with 15 tackles (1 for loss) and three pass breakups. Advantage: UAB

Special Teams

Matt Quinn has had his struggles this season but the senior came through in the clutch with a game-winning kick last week against Florida Atlantic. He is now 7-for-12 on field goal attempts this season with two blocked kicks and a long of 48 yards. Patrick Foley has exceeded expectations and is critical for field position, averaging 41.8 yards per punt with six kicks of more than 50 yards. The return game always has potential with Jermaine Brown Jr. and Mac McWilliams, but defending returns has been an issue this season.

Navy has used two different placekickers this season, senior Evan Warren and sophomore Nathan Kirkwood, and both have combined to go 5-for-9 on field goal attempts. Along with placekicking duties, Warren has 19 kickoffs with four touchbacks and two kicks out of bounds and Kirkwood has 12 kickoffs with three touchbacks. Riley Riethman has 54 punt attempts and is averaging 44.9 yards per kick with 16 fair catches, 16 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and 14 kicks of more than 50 yards. Freshman Tyler Bradley averages 17.9 yards on kick return and Amin Hassan averages 9.1 yards per punt return. Advantage: Even
