Tuberville objects to military promotions as Tim Kaine moves to advance them

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., on Thursday continued to derail the advancement of military promotions he has held up since mid-February as Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., attempted to move the more than 300 nominations on the Senate floor.

“I object,” said Tuberville, who has put holds on the nominations over Defense Department policies on abortion, including reimbursing travel expenses for service members who seek abortions but live in an area where the procedure is illegal.

Kaine noted that Thursday is “Military Day” in Alabama, which Gov. Kay Ivey set in a proclamation last week.

The Democratic senator from Virginia claimed Tuberville was holding the nominations hostage and accused the Alabama senator of damaging military readiness.

“Their lives remain in harm’s way and may pay the ultimate price,” Kaine said.

Kaine attempted to move the nominations through unanimous consent, which would allow the promotions to be approved without a vote of the full Senate.

But Tuberville’s objections mean the nominations can not move through the chamber.

Kaine told Politico reporter Burgess Everett he intends to get through all of the promotions on Thursday:

Kaine’s effort comes a week after Republican Sens. Dan Sullivan of Alaska and Joni Ernst of Iowa attempted to move the nominations through unanimous consent.

That move was also blocked by Tuberville.

Last week, the Alaska senator said he was frustrated with Tuberville’s tactics, and claimed America’s adversaries were delighting in the gridlock caused by his colleague.

“By the way, [Chinese President] Xi Jinping is watching this right now, going, ‘I can’t believe they’re not letting these guys command. I’m scared to death of subs.’ He’s loving this. So is [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. They’re loving it,” Sullivan said. “How dumb can we be, man?”
