South Alabama drops Sun Belt opener at Ga Southern, 64-50
Georgia Southern battered South Alabama on the boards in a 64-50 victory in Statesboro, Ga., on Thursday night.
The Eagles outrebounded the Jaguars 54-27, leading to 14 second-chance points. Jalen Finch scored 14 points and added five rebounds and five assists for Georgia Southern (8-6, 1-0 Sun Belt).
South Alabama (6-7, 0-1) saw its three-game winning streak snapped, and shot just 29.7 percent from the field. The Jaguars trailed most of the way after an early 5-2 lead, falling behind by 10 at halftime and by as many as 18 in the second half.
Isaiah Moore scored a game-high 15 points to lead the way for South Alabama, while Tyrell Jones added 14 and Owen White 11. Kevin Samuel and Greg Parham — both averaging 11.8 points per game coming in — combined for just five Thursday on 2-for-17 shooting.
Kaden Archie added 12 points and six rebounds for Georgia Southern, while Kamari Brown had 12 rebounds and Carlos Curry had 11. The Eagles scored 42 points in the paint in the game.
South Alabama stays on the road Saturday, facing Georgia State in Atlanta at 1 p.m. Saturday.
