Suspect in 15-year-old Alabama girl’s fentanyl overdose death to be tried as adult

The suspect charged in connection with the fatal fentanyl overdose of his 15-year-old Alabama girlfriend will be tried as an adult after a Mobile County judge denied his request for youthful offender status.

Lewis Jackson Powell, 18, had been charged as an adult in the August 2022 death of 15-year-old Adrianna Taylor, but he asked the court to treat him as a youthful offender.

On Monday, Mobile County Circuit Court Judge Jay A. York denied Powell’s youthful offender request, records showed.

Powell, who is accused of supplying the fentanyl that caused Adrianna’s death, also pleaded not guilty to reckless manslaughter charges during his Monday court appearance.

Adrianna was a student at Mary G. Montgomery High School. Powell was 17 at the time of his girlfriend’s death.

The indictment against Powell alleges he supplied either marijuana and/or Xanax laced with fentanyl when Adrianna died.

Late last month, York ordered house arrest and electronic monitoring for Powell after the teen posted $150,000 bond.
