Suspect shot dead after chase with authorities in southeast Alabama

State lawmen are investigating after a suspect was shot dead by authorities Tuesday following a chase in southeast Alabama.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office requested the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation to probe an officer-involved shooting in the area, said ALEA spokeswoman Amanda Wasden.

The SBI usually investigates all shootings involving law enforcement in Alabama.

Henry County sheriff’s deputies responded to U.S. Highway 431 in Headland around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to help Eufaula police with a pursuit that started in Eufala.

The sheriff’s office took over the pursuit near Henry County when the suspect continued southbound at a speed greater than 120 m.p.h., said Henry County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Joshua Behringer.

The suspect crossed the median and was going southbound in the northbound lane until he lost control just south of Henry County Road 22, Behringer said.

The suspect fled the scene and was shot while authorities attempted to arrest him.

“Per policy, all officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave to include Sheriff [Eric] Blankenship,” Behringer said. “At the request of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office the State Bureau of Investigations (ALEA) will be handling the investigation.”

No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident, Blankenship told WDHN.
