Homewood police were dispatched at 11:49 a.m. Monday to perform a welfare check on a man at his home on Edgecrest Drive, off Oxmoor Road.

A perimeter was set up and Homewood’s SWAT team arrived on the scene. The man’s wife and parents were standing with police a distance away from the house.

Police and at least one family member of the man spoke with him over a loudspeaker, asking him to surrender. He was alone inside the house.

At about 12:45 p.m., Carr said, the man surrendered peacefully.

After he left the house, police found his dog dead inside.

He is being taken to a hospital for evaluation.
