How much rain could Alabama get to end 2022?

The end of 2022 is looking soggy for Alabama.

Periods of heavy rain will be possible across Alabama through Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Several more rounds of rain will also be possible through the first week of 2023.

The rain could add up in some areas, and localized flooding will be possible, according to forecasters.

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center is forecasting up to 5 inches of rain for parts of Alabama through the next seven days. Two to 3 inches will be possible for all of the state through next Thursday.

There are two main periods of rain expected. The first will begin on Friday, mainly Friday afternoon into Friday night, and last until Saturday afternoon.

The second round of rain could arrive on Monday and last into Tuesday, according to the weather service.

The Weather Prediction Center has a Level 2 out of 4 risk for flash flooding for much of Alabama on Friday:

Much of Alabama has a Level 2 out of 5 risk for flash flooding on Friday.

The weather service said the western parts of the state will likely see the most rain on Friday, with lesser amounts possible in east Alabama.

Rain could begin on Friday morning or afternoon in west Alabama and spread eastward through the evening hours.

The heaviest rain will be possible Friday night.

Friday’s rain will also bring with it the potential for a few stronger storms near the Gulf Coast. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for Friday. That means isolated severe storms will be possible.

A few strong storms will be possible close to the Gulf Coast on Friday.

The weather service will also be watching conditions on Monday for the potential for storms. As of Thursday the SPC doesn’t have a severe weather risk for Alabama, but strong storms will be possible to the west of the state, and trends will be monitored in case the storm potential shifts eastward.

There could also be the chance for more storms — and more rain — on Wednesday, according to the weather service. However, forecasters said a lot of details about Wednesday, and the potential for storms, still could change.

The good news — at least for fans of warmer weather — is that temperatures will remain mild through next week, with highs expected to be in the 60s and 70s statewide through at least next Tuesday.

Monday, Jan. 2, looks to be one of the warmest days in the next week, with highs in the 70s possible for much of the state. Here’s the forecast for Monday:
