Kolton Nero sets records as Foley beats Jackson-Olin

Foley running back Kolton Nero found the perfect way to cap his senior season – one of the best individual seasons in Foley history – in Friday’s victory over Jackson-Olin.

Nero ran 35 times for 331 yards, setting a single-game school rushing record, and five touchdowns at J-O Field in Birmingham’s Ensley community. Nero finished the season with more than 2,000 yards, another single-season record.

“We just wanted to play the best game we can play,” Nero said. “We were able to execute tonight. My O-line did a good job opening holes up for me. I just tried not to get tackled and outrun people. Without my O-line, I wouldn’t be able to accomplish nothing.”

Nero scored on runs of 7, 39 and 10 yards in the first half and had a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter. His 3-yard TD run with 3:27 remaining put the game out of reach. He finished the season with 25 touchdowns, another single-season school record.

“Kolton has been our workhorse all season,” Foley coach Deric Scott said. “We just wanted to give him the opportunity to do his thing tonight, and he did just that.”

Stat sheet: Two Jackson-Olin players ran for more than 100 yards, as Cam Orange had 16 carries for 133 yards and a 1-yard TD run and Aydden Moody had five carries for 126 yards, with TD runs of 40 and 49 yards. Que Davis also scored on a 2-yard run for the Mustangs. … For Foley, Matthew Owen kicked a field goal.

Missing star: Foley senior receiver and Auburn commit Perry Thompson did not play. Scott said he chose to hold out the star to prevent any chance of injury, since the Lions were already eliminated from the playoffs.

Did you know?: Jackson-Olin (0-10) dropped its 12th straight game.

Coachspeak: “Give J-O credit, they came to play tonight. with this being the final game of the season for both teams.” — Scott

What’s next?: Neither team is heading to the playoffs, but the win gives Foley (5-5) its third straight non-losing season. That hasn’t happened for the Loins since 2013-15. “We can build off this win heading into next season,” Scott said.
