Jacks McClung passes Huntsville past Hazel Green

Huntsville wrapped up its season with a dominating 56-13 win over Hazel Green on Thursday night.

The Crimson Panthers were led by senior quarterback Jacks McClung, who completed 20-of-21 passes for 332 yards and six touchdowns.

Huntsville (5-5) got off to a fast start in the first quarter, jumping out to a 14-0 lead as McClung threw touchdown passes to Ashton Caldwell from 50 yards out and Garner Ferrell from 11 yards.

Hazel Green (0-10) fumbled on its next possession and Huntsville’s Jase Reed scooped it up and scored from 50 yards out to increase the lead to 21-0. Hazel Green got on the board with Evan Pollut’s 77-yard burst to the end zone, cutting the lead to 21-7.

But the Trojan momentum was short lived as Ramon White returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, pushing the Huntsville lead to 28-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Huntsville was relentless with its passing game in the second quarter as McClung threw four more touchdown passes — 34 yards to Jack Carter, 16 yards to Huck Hensley, 4 yards to Caldwell and 33 yards to Chase Cartron — to take a 56-7 lead into the half.

The second half was played with two 10-minute, running clock quarters as both teams emptied their benches. The Trojans scored one final touchdown on the last play of the game as quarterback Keith Garrett took a keeper 66 yards as time expired.

Star of the Game: McClung was the star of the night with his 332 yards passing and six touchdown passes.

Stat Sheet: Huntsville – 383 total yards. 332 passing and 51 yards rushing.

Hensley caught six for 69 yards and a touchdown, Carter caught four for 104 yards and a touchdown, Caldwell had four catches for 60 yards and a touchdown, Cartron had two catches for 38 yards and a touchdown and Ferrell caught three for 33 yards and a touchdown.

Hazel Green – 270 total yards. 213 rushing and 57 passing. Pollut rushed for 112 yards on eight carries and a touchdown and Garrett rushing for 77 yards on six carries and a touchdown.

By the Numbers: 0 – Huntsville did not punt. 10 – Both teams attempted five fourth-down conversions. Hazel Green converted 1-of-5 and Huntsville converted 2-of-5.

What’s next? 2024. Neither team qualified for the playoffs.
