Huntsville’s Hispanic community looks for opportunity and inclusion

Andrea Borbon admits to feeling alone at times since moving to Huntsville two years ago.

From Colombia, she is among the better educated members of the city’s growing Hispanic population, which Huntsville officials estimate to be around 8% according to the most recent census data.

Borbon has a master’s degree, but voices some frustration about the lack of employment opportunities she has found in a city known for job creation.

“There are a lot in the Latino community who are professionals who have master’s degrees or college degrees,” she said. “But we have to work in restaurants.”

It was a common concern voiced at a town hall meeting hosted by the city at McDonnell Elementary School on Tuesday night.
