Titans running back Derrick Henry: King of prime time

Tennessee running back Derrick Henry will have another opportunity to shine in prime time when the Titans play the Pittsburgh Steelers at 7:15 p.m. CDT Thursday.

The former Alabama All-American has appeared in 20 prime-time games, including the playoffs, and he has the best rushing average in prime-time games for any NFL player who has appeared in at least 10.

Henry has averaged 95.7 rushing yards per prime-time game. He has 1,913 yards and 18 touchdowns on 382 carries in those 20 contests.

The player behind Henry on the list for average rushing yards per prime-time game is Edgerrin James. In his 11 NFL seasons from 1999 through 2009, the Pro Football Hall of Fame running back averaged 88.5 rushing yards in 20 prime-time games with 1,771 yards and 14 touchdowns on 474 carries.

Another former Crimson Tide star is No. 3 on prime-time rushing list. During his NFL career from 2000 through 2008, Alexander averaged 86.4 rushing yards per prime-time appearance with 1,468 yards and 19 touchdowns on 325 carries.

Pittsburgh already has had a former Alabama running back post a 100-yard rushing game against it during prime time this season. Jerome Ford, who played two seasons for the Tide before transferring to Cincinnati, stepped in when Nick Chubb went down with a knee injury in the Week 2 Monday night game and ran for 106 yards on 16 carries in the Cleveland Browns’ 26-22 loss to the Steelers.

“We got to do a really good job of working to minimize him,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said about Henry. “But that’s just a component of it. Their play-action passing game, their misdirection passing game, all of those things feed off of his talents. You better do a really good job of bottling him up at the line of scrimmage. You can’t let him get to the second and third level clean. If he does, he is really a problem. His long speed is an issue. His size and strength, obviously, is an issue. His free hand is an issue. He’s got one of the best stiff-arms around. His ability to utilize it to extend big plays is something special. They screen him the ball as well. They just do a really good job just playing off his exploits and including others while doing so.”

Henry has 526 yards and three touchdowns on 120 rushing attempts in 2023. Last season through seven games, Henry had 755 yards and seven touchdowns on 166 rushing attempts. Henry has averaged 6.5 fewer carries per game in 2023 than in 2022 as Tennessee has used rookie Tyjae Spears more than other backups in the past. Henry has been on the field for 57 percent of the Titans’ offensive snaps and Spears has been on the field for 50 percent this season.

Henry ran for 101 yards on 22 carries in the Titans’ 28-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Rookie quarterback Will Levis threw four touchdown passes in his NFL debut in that game. With QB Ryan Tannehill still out with an ankle injury, Levis will start again for Tennessee in Thursday night’s game.

Prime Video will televise the contest from Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
