The Week 10 Hollis Wright Birmingham Football Player of the Week had a dominating performance in leading his team to its first playoff berth since 2009.
John Carroll quarterback Carson McFadden earned 39 percent of 5,311 votes cast in the weekly poll. The senior totaled 335 yards and six touchdowns as the Cavaliers beat Wenonah 49-35 to improve to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in Class 5A, Region 5 play.
McFadden completed 11-of-16 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns, ran 13 times for 73 yards and three scores and caught at 10-yard TD pass in the win.
Coach Will Mara’s Cavs will close out their season against Maplesville this week before playing Boaz in the opening round of the playoffs.
Briarwood Christian running back Luke Reynolds broke the program’s record for rushing yards with 221 on 20 carries, previously held by Tim Castille, to finish second in the voting. Reynolds also recorded five tackles, with a sack and a tackle for a loss, in a 20-13 win over Homewood.
Mortimer Jordan quarterback Garrett Ames was third in the balloting. Ames completed all 10 of his passes – five for touchdowns – for 214 yards in a 52-8 win over Jackson-Olin.
Voting for the Hollis Wright Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
In Week 10, more than 27,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
