Week 10 Cunningham Bounds Coastal Player of the Week is repeat winner
The Week 10 Cunningham Bounds Coastal Alabama Player of the Week ran away with the balloting on the way to his second award of the season, much like he ran his team’s offense in a runaway win to cap an undefeated regular season.
Quarterback Damien Gatson of Mobile Christian topped the voting in the poll, earning 60 percent of 21,649 votes. Gatson, a junior who has committed to play baseball at the University of South Alabama, completed 14-of-24 passes for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the top-ranked Leopards beat Thomasville 45-14. The win lifted the Leopards to a 10-0 overall mark and 7-0 finish in Class 3A, Region 1.
Gatson also was voted player of the week in Week 6.
Davidson’s DJ Butler finished second in the poll after he ran for 306 yards on 15 carries with four touchdowns in a 34-19 win over Alma Bryant.
Martin Corte of St. Michael was third in the balloting after he ran for 187 yards and six touchdowns and added seven catches for 58 yards in a 55-54 win over T.R. Miller.
Voting for the Cunningham Bounds Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
In Week 10, more than 27,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
