Man found dead in wrecked vehicle after shooting at east Birmingham gas station

Gunfire rang out in the parking lot of an east Birmingham gas station early Thursday, leaving one man dead and a woman injured.

Birmingham police were notified by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office just before 3:30 a.m. of the shooting, which happened at the Marathon station at 4567 Pinson Valley Parkway.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers discovered that a vehicle had been parked at the gas station when another vehicle pulled up and fired several shots at the victims.

The victims drove off but crashed a short distance away.

Fitzgerald said the male victim inside the vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene.

The female victim was taken to the hospital. Her condition wasn’t immediately available.

The woman is believed to have been injured in the wreck, not by the gunfire.

Fitzgerald said the shooting was targeted.

Though the store was open at the time, no one else was injured.

The deadly shooting marks Birmingham’s 112th homicide so far this year. Of those 110, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and eight others have been ruled justifiable.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 158 homicides, including the 112 in Birmingham.
