Alabama football No. 8 in first College Football Playoff rankings of 2023
The first College Football Playoff rankings of the year were unveiled Tuesday, and Alabama football was left outside the top four. The Crimson Tide was ranked No. 8 by the selection committee, which tabbed Ohio State as the No. 1 team, followed by Georgia, Michigan and Florida State.
Washington and Oregon were the first two teams outside the playoff spots. Tuesday’s rankings were the third time ever that Alabama has been outside the initial top four since the CFP began.
Alabama fell one spot behind Texas, after losing to the Longhorns in Week 2 for its only loss of the year so far. The Crimson Tide currently sits at 7-1, 5-0 in SEC play.
Last year, when Alabama started at No. 6 before falling out of contention with a loss to LSU, was the first time since 2014, the first year of the CFP that the Crimson Tide hasn’t been in the top four when the first rankings were released. That season, Alabama lost to Ole Miss in October, but was able to claw back into the top four by winning out and taking the SEC championship, before falling to Ohio State in the semifinal.
This year, Alabama will likely have a chance to play its way into the top four. That opportunity will continue on Saturday against No. 14 LSU, a game with major implications for the SEC West.
After facing the Tigers, the Crimson Tide heads to Kentucky on Nov. 11. After that, UA returns home to face Chattanooga.
Alabama closes its SEC season in the Iron Bowl at Auburn. The Tigers have struggled in Hugh Freeze’s first season on the plains, but the Crimson Tide has had its struggles at Jordan-Hare Stadium through the years.
The College Football Playoff rankings will continue to be released on a weekly basis through the end of the season. The semifinal games this year will be the Sugar Bowl and the Rose Bowl.
The national championship game will be played in Houston this year, at NRG Stadium. That game is scheduled for Jan. 8.
This year’s College Football Playoff will be the last of the four-team format, before it goes to 12 teams next season.
