5 Huntsville area HS football games to watch in Week 11

Here are five games to watch in the Huntsville area this week with the complete schedule following.

MADISON ACADEMY (9-0) AT WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN (8-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Earl Van Dyke Stadium, Huntsville

Last week: Class 3A, No. 2-ranked Madison Academy beat Susan Moore 55-7. Class 4A Westminster defeated New Hope 55-28.

The skinny: Madison Academy has won all seven meetings against its fellow Huntsville school. The Mustangs rolled 49-14 last season. … Madison Academy running back Ken Cherry totaled 218 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns last week against Susan Moore. He ran for 166 yards and four TDs against Westminster last season. … The Mustangs average 53.7 points — third highest among all classifications — and they have eclipsed 50 points in five of their last six games. They’ve been equally impressive on defense, allowing just 8.9 points per game; Madison Academy has held its last five opponents to seven or fewer points. … The Mustangs are winning games by an average margin of 44.8 points, tops in the state among all classifications, according to AHSFHS.org. … Westminster senior quarterback Brandon Musch accounted for 314 yards of offense and six touchdowns — three passing and three rushing — against New Hope last week. He’s 46 yards shy of 13,000 career yards and is approaching Lanett’s Kristian Story (13,218) for second in AHSAA history. Musch has 177 career touchdowns; he surpassed Story last week for second all-time. Piedmont’s Jack Hayes holds the record of 223. … Westminster averages 50.1 points per game — fifth highest among all classifications — but allows 30.3.

RUSSELLVILLE (8-1) AT ATHENS (7-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Larry McCoy Field

Last week: Class 5A, No. 10-ranked Russellville beat sixth-ranked Fairview 31-14. Class 6A Athens edged Fort Payne 29-28.

The skinny: Athens has clinched a playoff berth after missing the postseason the past two years. … Quarterback Brogan Gross passed for 349 yards and three touchdowns against Fort Payne. He has 24 TD passes this season. … Cameron Phinizee is Russellville’s workhorse. He ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries against Fairview, giving him 1,816 yards and 33 TDs for the season. … The Golden Tigers earned the 5A, Region 8 title by defeating Fairview. … Athens edged Russellville 32-31 last season. The Golden Eagles scored 25 unanswered points in the second half to erase a 31-7 deficit. Russellville leads the series 20-9.

RANDOLPH (6-3) AT FAIRVIEW (8-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Dafford Smith Stadium

Last week: Class 4A Randolph defeated Priceville 28-24. Class 5A, No. 6-ranked Fairview lost 31-14 to 10th-ranked Russellville.

The skinny: Randolph has won four straight … Graham Batey ran for 193 yards and three touchdowns and caught a TD pass against Priceville. … Fairview was allowing only 7.1 points per game before yielding 31 to Russellville. … Aggies quarterback Kolt Redding — son of head coach George Redding — threw a pair of touchdown passes in a losing effort. … Both coaches are the winningest at their respective programs: Redding is 116-68 in 17 seasons, and Randolph’s David Lloyd is 31-14 in four seasons. … Randolph defeated Fairview 34-14 last season to increase its series lead to 4-1.

HARTSELLE (7-2) AT BOB JONES (5-4)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Madison City Schools Stadium

Last week: Class 6A, No. 8-ranked Hartselle had an open week. Class 7A Bob Jones beat Albertville 51-6.

The skinny: Hartselle played five consecutive one-score games prior to its bye week. The last of those was a 20-19 win over Decatur on Oct. 20 in which Noah Smith threw to go-ahead touchdown to Markus Tapscott with 9.2 seconds left in the game. Smith has been the starting quarterback since Landon Blackwood suffered an injury against Gadsden City on Sept. 22. … Ri Fletcher has sparked the Tigers offense this season, rushing for 958 yards and 13 touchdowns. In last year’s 38-31 win over Bob Jones, Fletcher ran for 190 yards and two TDs. … Bob Jones bounced back from an 0-3 start to earn a playoff berth. … The Patriots amassed 507 yards of offense and forced four turnovers against Albertville. … Bob Jones running back Tyren Washington has 16 touchdowns on the ground this season. He ran for 132 yards and two scores against Hartselle last season. … The Tigers have won five of six meetings against Bob Jones.

GUNTERSVILLE (7-1) AT ALBERTVILLE (0-9)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, McCord Field

Last week: Class 5A Guntersville blanked Sardis 55-0. Class 7A Albertville lost 51-6 to Bob Jones

The skinny: This is the 109th meeting between Guntersville and Albertville, the most games played in a rivalry in state history, according to AHSFHS.org. The teams first met in 1914, making this the state’s second-oldest rivalry behind Sylacauga-Talladega (1911). … Guntersville has won the last four meetings — including 49-7 last year — and leads the series 55-47-6. … Guntersville quarterback Eli Morrison threw three touchdown passes against Sardis as the Wildcats bounced back from a loss to Arab. The win marked Guntersville’s first shutout of the season. The Wildcats allow just 10.9 points per game. … Albertville has surrendered at least 50 points the past two weeks and four times this season. … Aggies receiver Hunter Smith has caught six TD passes this season.
