Justin Thomas to play for Atlanta in new golf league

Justin Thomas will play for the Atlanta Drive GC in a new golf league.

On Tuesday, TGL and the Atlanta Drive GC announced the former Alabama All-American as the first golfer on what will be a four-man squad in the new-format, six-team league launching in January.

TGL was developed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. On its website, TGL describes its golf as “fusing advanced tech and live action.” The golfers will compete at SoFi Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, a custom-built arena combining “a data-rich virtual course with a state-of-the-art short-game complex.”

“Atlanta and the state of Georgia have been the home to some of the biggest sporting events in the country, and I’m excited to represent fans there as part of TGL and Atlanta Drive GC,” Thomas said in a release from Atlanta Drive GC. “To be aligned with an owner like Arthur Blank and his incredible variety of businesses as they expand their golf portfolio feels like a great fit for me. I promise our team will compete hard to win championships and have a lot of fun along the way. We will represent Atlanta in the best way possible while helping grow the game everywhere through this unique TGL format.”

Thomas has 15 PGA Tour victories in his career, including two major championships – the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championship tournaments – and won the PGA Tour FedEx Cup in 2017.

At Alabama, Thomas was the National Player of the Year in 2012 and a member of the Crimson Tide’s national-championship team in 2013.

Thomas is the first of the 24 PGA Tour players who have committed to the league to be assigned to a team.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Justin Thomas to Atlanta Drive GC and believe he’s a perfect fit for who we want this team to be and how we want to play,” said Dick Sullivan, the CEO of PGA Tour Superstore who is overseeing Atlanta Drive GC. “Thomas’ remarkable talent, unwavering dedication to the game and competitive spirit make him a fan favorite and someone who represents the values that drive all AMBSE teams and businesses.”

Five of the six TGL teams have been announced. In addition to Atlanta, teams will represent Boston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.

Starting on Jan. 9, the league will stage 15 regular-season matches followed by semifinals and finals, which will be televised in prime time on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+.
