Austin rolls past Huntsville in regular-season finale

Austin rolled past Huntsville 52-25 in the Class 7A, Region 4 finale on Friday night at Alabama A&M’s Louis Crews Stadium.

The Black Bears from Decatur completed their regular season at 8-2 and were 5-2 in region play. Huntsville fell to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in Region 4 with its finale set for next week at home against Hazel Green.

Quarterbacks Judd Bailey and Jason Davis threw two touchdown passes apiece for Austin. Gavin Fuqua and Kenneth Joshua both had scoring runs.

Nathan Taylor blocked a Huntsville field-goal attempt and Kaleb Taylor returned it for a touchdown for the Bears. Ethan Wynn and Corey House had interceptions for Austin.

“We came back out and made a run in the second half,” Huntsville head coach Mark Fleetwood said, “but the blocked field goal sort of dampened our spirits,” Fleetwood said. “I thought our kids played really hard.”

Jacks McClung accounted for all four Huntsville touchdowns. He threw for three scores and added another on a run.

Lawson Neighbors caught two of McClung’s touchdown throws and Ashton Caldwell grabbed the other toss for the Panthers (4-5, 3-4).

“We’ve got an open week next week to heal up a little bit and to rest a little bit,” Austin coach Jeremy Perkins said looking ahead to the 7A playoffs. “Hoping to get a head start. Hopefully we’ll know who we’re playing.”

Huntsville’s season will end next week when the Panthers host Hazel Green.
