Suspect in Maine mass shooting is dead, the AP reports

The suspect in the Lewiston mass shooting that killed 18 people on Wednesday is dead, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

Robert Card, 40, had been trained as a firearms instructor at a U.S. Army Reserve training facility in Maine. Card was in a mental health facility for two weeks this summer and was “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” a military base.

A U.S. official said Card was training with the Army Reserve’s 3rd Battalion, 304th Infantry Regiment in West Point, New York, when commanders became concerned about him this summer.

He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the AP reported.

The official was not authorized to discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity. A 10 p.m. news conference was scheduled by police.

Officials have been searching various areas around Maine for the suspect for the past two days after the shootings at Schemengees Bar and Grille and at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley in Lewiston. Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael J. Sauschuck told reporters they were not giving up searching.

“We are on 24-7, and we will be until the suspect in this case is brought to justice,” Sauschuck said.

Earlier on Friday, the shelter-in-place was lifted. However, hunting was not allowed in Lewiston, Lisbone, Bowdoin and Monmouth.

The names and photos of the 18 people killed in the mass shooting were made public Friday.

The youngest was 14-year-old Aaron Young who was bowling with his father William A. Young, who also died.

“If anyone ever needed anything, Bill and his wife were the first to lend a hand. I couldn’t have asked for a better big brother,” the GoFundMe, created by Bill Young’s brother and Aaron Young’s uncle, Rob Young.
