Survey says ‘Saw X’ is America’s most popular Halloween movie. But it’s not Alabama’s.

For many families, part of the Halloween tradition is to get together and watch movies, whether they be Halloween-themed, horror, family-friendly, or just plain terrifying.

A recent survey sought to determine America’s favorite Halloween movies, with the results broken down by state. According to the HubScore.co results, “Saw X” — a 2023 horror film and the 10th in the “Saw” series, was the choice in 13 states, including many of Alabama’s neighbors: Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee and Arkansas.

Coming in as the second most-popular Halloween movie was the Tim Burton classic “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” which took the top spot in seven states, mostly in the western U.S.

Across the U.S., the choices seemed to be a mix of current releases and timeless classics.

But what of Alabama? According to the survey, the most popular Halloween movie in the Yellowhammer state is the 1993 Disney Halloween comedy classic “Hocus Pocus,” starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy).

Alabama wasn’t alone in its support of “Hocus Pocus,” which took the spot as the most popular in five other states, making it the third most-popular Halloween movie in the U.S.

The survey also listed the top five Halloween movie in each state. Here’s Alabama’s full list, with the year of release in parentheses:

  1. “Hocus Pocus” (1993)
  2. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
  3. “Saw X” (2023)
  4. “Halloween” (1978)
  5. “Scream VI” (2023)
