Nick Saban on his âobsessive compulsiveâ Ferrari runs, momâs birthday joke and more
Alabama coach Nick Saban plans to let his hair down this week. Well, sort of.
The Tide is in the midst of a bye week before an SEC West showdown with LSU in two Saturdays from now.
On Thursday, during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the 71-year-old coach was asked if he was going to “live a little,” maybe chew some cigars.

“I’m sure I obsessive compulsive or something,” Saban said. “I drive the Ferrari on Wednesday … if it’s not raining. That’s kind of the program.”
The Ferrari topic has become a consistent theme with McAfee as of late.
McAfee noted last week he is a self-proclaimed car guy, though, not the type of cars Saban dabbles in. Last year, the Alabama coach became part of the ownership group of Prancing Horse of Nashville, a 43,400-square-foot showroom for a Ferrari dealership, one of only 60 in the world.
“Just one,” Saban said last week when he was asked if he had a couple of Ferraris. “We had two, but we traded two for one we wanted, which is the way it works with Ferrari.”
As you can see, Saban is very specific – err obsessive compulsive – about his routine, which is why he already has his week planned.

“We always go to the lake,” he said. “We have a birthday dinner with a bunch of our friends on Saturday and turn around and come back.
“It’s enjoyable. I still watch film, and I’ll be watching LSU cut ups and all the stuff.”
The bye week, he admits, is advantageous for a couple of reasons.
“It’s enjoyable to have a change of scenery if you know what I mean. When you are working 12 and 14 hours a day ever since Aug. 1, it’s great to have a little time to decompress in a different environment.”
As the Alabama coach mentions, his birthday is Oct. 31, coinciding with another yearly event. McAfee said Saban’s “next trip around the sun” will be his best yet. That’s when Saban, with his self-deprecating humor that McAfee appears to be able to bring out in him, shined.
“I hope so, but if you ask my mom, I still think after all these years she doesn’t know if she got a trick or a treat.”
Well played, coach.
