The NCAA’s football redshirt rules used to be simpler. If a player played in a game, their redshirt was burned.

The rule got a bit more complicated in 2018, when players started being allowed to play in up to four games. Now, the redshirt only comes off when a player enters his fifth game of a season.

So far this season, Alabama football only has five true freshman who have burned their redshirts. Those names will be recognizable to anyone who has watched the Crimson Tide this season, including the likes of Kadyn Proctor, Justice Hanes and Caleb Downs.

Eight games into the 2023 season, here is a list of the team’s true freshman, sorted by how many games they have appearances in, based on Pro Football Focus’ snap counts.
