Report: Documents could lead to investigation of Gulf Shores athletics

The No. 1 ranked Gulf Shores High School football program could be under investigation by the Alabama High School Athletic Association soon, according to a report Wednesday night by WKRG News 5 in Mobile.

WKRG news anchor Simone Eli cited documents obtained by her station Wednesday night alleging that Gulf Shores-based fitness company Gulf Shores Athletics was paying rent for multiple Dolphins transfer student-athletes and their families at a local apartment complex over the course of the last few years.

According to WKRG, an AHSAA investigator will be in town Monday to take a “deeper look” into the football program.

Neither Gulf Shores superintendent Matt Akin nor head football coach Mark Hudspeth immediately returned messages from AL.com late Wednesday night. The Dolphins host Vigor in a Class 5A, Region 1 game Friday night.

Gulf Shores is currently 8-0 overall and 6-0 in region play and ranked atop the Class 5A Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. After Friday’s game with Vigor, the Dolphins host B.C. Rain in the regular-season finale on Nov. 3.

The playoffs are scheduled to start Nov. 10. It’s unknown at this time how any possible AHSAA investigation could affect the team’s standing entering the postseason. Already in the last couple of weeks, three teams — Coosa Christian, Pell City and Vigor — have forfeited wins for a violation of the AHSAA transfer rule.

Hudspeth, a successful college coach before arriving at Gulf Shores, is 25-6 in three years with the Dolphins. His 2022 team went 11-2 and reached the Class 5A quarterfinals.

Akin told Eli that the school had 100 new transfers on campus this year but only nine were football players. He said the school had a detailed enrollment process, and he is convinced the team is doing things the right way.

Gulf Coast Athletics is described as a sports performance and youth program designed to help athletes become elite on and off the field.

Hudspeth guided Austin Peay to 11 wins in 2019 and was the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to being hired at Gulf Shores three years ago, he had not coached on the high school level since 1997.

He spent time as an assistant at the college level at Central Arkansas (1992-1993, 1998), Nicholls State (1994-1995), Delta State (1999-2000) and Navy (2001) before earning his first college head coaching job at North Alabama. Hudspeth led the Lions from 2002-2008, accumulating a 66-21 record and winning a pair of Gulf South Conference titles. He spent seven years (2011-2017) as head coach at Louisiana, going 29-38. He spent 2018 as assistant head coach and tight ends coach at Mississippi State before taking the head coaching job at Austin Peay.
